Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

This event has ended and I recommend you guys head over to the Folding Community Board for any general folding conversation.

Assuming for whatever reason, (0.500kW * 24 hrs) * 0.087 (power bill says 8.72c /kWh) = $1.05 per 24hrs running my comp, at highest worst case scenario?

Yep, also GIVE ME YOUR POWER COST PRICE!

Not going to lie, I'm a little worried about what my power bill might actually turn into. Can any Albertans/Canadians speak to their estimated cost differences?

My partner estimates that with both of us folding 24/7, our power bill will go up by about $50/mo., but we are west of you so I'm not sure if that helps.

You can do a bit of math yourself and it shouldn't be massively off. If your computer uses ~400W then look at your power bill and get the kwh per unit price then:

(0.4 * total hours per day) * kwh price = Cost per day

E.g (0.6 * 24) * 0.2902 = $4.18/day

wow 0.29/kWh in NZ$ or $0.25Cdn. My fully loaded rate is $0.12/kWh here in Ontario going to double on-peak

The Ontario Government has suspended time-of-use rates so all electricity is at the least-expensive rate at present. They may have done something similar in Alberta.

Running a CPU and GPU, say 500W to keep it simple, 24x7 would consume 12kWh per day so at an averaged rate of $0.1675  (12 hours at $0.12, 6 hours at $0.18 and 6 at $0.24) would cost $2.01 per day.

Of course in this climate that 500W is also turned into heat meaning your furnace doesn't have to work as hard to keep your house at a set temperature so you'd save a bit on your heating bill.

I wish I could take advantage of that win, but my apartment doesn't charge heat, and doesn't quite heat well enough in the first place, so no cost savings, but I've definitely been enjoying the increase in heat in my livingroom hahah!

Don't worry, the good old US of A has barely bothered to acknowledge we need to shut down things!  I'll be honest, I was amazed they suspended student loan payments.

R5 3600, 5700 XT, AX370 K7...  and that's plenty for me.  If you ignore the masses of other parts I occasionally put together and laugh about.

Just curious. Does anyone know any of the St. Louis School of Medicine staff working with folding, or any bio researchers working on a vaccine? Would be nice to know how much our folding are helping.

Yea I'm forced on to a 'low usage' plan because I have solar and export, I've had it as low as $0.18/kwh but the daily connection charge is higher. But because of how much I use the much lower connection charge is moot.

Why is it power companies assume I'm going to use less with solar, do they not know.

As for power usage, my UPS says I'm using 576W for this workload at the moment, thats not the highest power consumption ive seen (I've seen 626w before, I'd imagine the type of calculations its running varies the power usage and clock speed of the CPU/GPU) Not too worried about my power bill, its offset by the solar and such

I would take a stab at the power company figuring people who are interested in solar are going to go through all the other upgrades to make a more power efficient house overall, IE top tier insulation, very modern high efficiency appliances and may change behaviors based on it

Me and you? Sounds like less so. In my case im quite curious how things will be in the summer, the room my comp is in (A combination home theater/home office for myself) is on the second floor and my roof has ZERO insulation. It gets bloody freezing in the winter and hot as a sauna in the summer and i have to run my air con/heat to keep it relatively comfortable. Add to that some health issues that means my body will decide it wont want to function outside of a certain temperature range and well.. i have fun

Was planning to upgrade the attic insulation, but thats possibly completely on hold due to covid 19.. by the time this mess is over the window to do so will possibly be gone, I do not like the idea of being in my attic in the middle of summer lol

Solar for me just means I can use more power 🤣

And I could do way way more if I put together all the parts I have in to working systems and ran them, I don't simply because power cost so more solar really does mean I can run more.

So WUs are finally starting to come in?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

My father got around this by installing an room unit.  Not the most efficient way of handling it but it got him through three years. Wish ya the best of luck.
