Is it true that Netflix does not play at 1080 on Chrome (Windows)?

I have noticed that the quality is a bit off. 

 

Someone told me that it may be the case that Netflix does not play at 1080 on Chrome due to DRM restrictions. 

 

Is this really the case? How can I find out for sure?

i sometimes see black/very slight green-ish pixel patches in very dark scenes and it's a lot worse on my 1440p monitors than my 1080 but also persists on my 1080, so i'm guessing that it's a posability

Just use Netflix UWP app from Microsoft Store. Works nice and fast.

Last I checked, yes, this was true for Chrome and Firefox and only Edge allowed full 1080p. That said, like @homeap5 said, just use the Netflix - app -- it can even do surround-sound and all, and allows for higher resolution and everything.

Yes, Chrome is limited to 720p and a lower bitrate, only Edge and Safari I believe allow 1080p. As others have mentioned above, you can use the Netflix app off the Microsoft Store which should give you the full quality.

Also, if you want to check, you can press CTRL+ALT+Shift+D to see what bitrate and resolution you're playing at.

have you tried changing the settings for netflix in the browser mine displays 1080p but i have to full screen it given im on a  21:9 monitor i use a exention called ultrawide wideo stretches it to fill the screen. some things look bad most i can get away with and not even notice the slight distortion.

It's entirely for DRM purposes. Why Netflix handles it like that, I dunno, but welcome to streaming DRM.

Two different things. OP is talking about the resolution of the video, not the resolution it's displayed at. Sure, you can stretch even a 240p-res stream to 1080p, but that doesn't make it a 1080p-stream.
