i7 3770s rig for home workstation

A1200

Hi all, been following LTT on YT for a while, thought I might as well join in on here. I am not a gamer but work in eCommece and so very IT heavy.

This is my workstation I have just put together from parts I had in old system and a few new bits from Amazon. Motherboard I purchased from eBay from Boston (UK) University. They have an eBay outlet where they sell all the boards they have changed for newer ones. Just a solid, steady and quiet machine  for the family to use office/photos on and a bit of working from home.

I did try setup with Unreal Tournament GOTY edition which is the last game I really played and of course it runs really well.

I have a similar rig for work which I will share the pics once I have the new cooler installed.

  • CiT Dark Star Midi Case
  • Gigabyte H77M-D3H Motherboard

I have done a couple of minor upgrades. The i7 3770s has been replaced with the 3770k, because why not right? Also got a 4x USB bracket to come of some of the spare USB host connections on the mother board, also got a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 OC 4GB GDDR6 Graphics Card (Model GV-N1656OC-4GD) not top of the range graphics but massive step up from the GT 1030.

OK I didn't like the moderate(ish) speed increase of the 1650 OC, so returned it and got a an ASUS TUF Gaming NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER instead. Also my RAM was purchased as 2 kits so I couldn't enable the XMP profile so I have ordered Corsair 32GB (4x8GB) Vengeance Low Profile DDR3 as a 4 DIMM kit so will benchmark and take new pics tomorrow but looking kinda good stats-wise already considering the microarchitecture (Ivy Bridge) is from 2012!

Yes it is vented at the bottom and on the sides..I have new pics I will upload once I put out the trash as well as do some benchmark screendumps.

OK I am going to hang fire on posting benchmarks - the boot SSD is a Kingston A400 240GB and even though it is only SATA 3 it is sucky even for SATA (data drive is a Samsung EVO much better results). So I have ordered and am going to do a data transfer of the boot drive to a MX500 250GB drive:

https://ssd.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Crucial-MX500-250GB-vs-Crucial-BX500-240GB/3951vsm578496

Huge difference. Will do new pics and benchmarks tomorrow if I have the time.

Doh just realised I posted the wrong comparison. I meant to show: https://ssd.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Kingston-A400-240GB-vs-Crucial-MX500-250GB/3953vs3951

OK added new SSD and didn't realise  SSD was in IDE not AHCI mode, so even more performance knocked out. New spec:

Some benchmarks of the upgraded machine. For general purpose productivity/gaming/development, it can handle it all from a 8 year old CPU. Can't complain!

Updated photos with new components. Also added a Startech PCIe USB 3.0 board & rear USB 2.0 ports from the motherboard IDC for more external I/O capacity.
