What’s a decent overclock on a 2080 Ti? ?

GamerBlake

Hey guys,

I’m making this post because I have an RTX 2080 Ti XC2 Ultra by EVGA and I’m curious what a decent overclock is for the core and memory clock speeds?

I know every card is different but I’m just curious what would be considered “good” for a 2080 Ti. By “good” I mean not exactly “world class”, but just for an average gamer.

I currently have my card at 2040 MHz core 8000 MHz memory. Is that good?

Thanks!

Turing GPUs' OC except the 1650 ranges from 2 to 2.2GHz. With power limit this generous, I'd say your core OC is below average.

Is memory capped to 8000MHz and software doesnt let you go higher?

Oh no it’s not capped at all. I just started there so I didn’t overdo it.

I’ve noticed it will still run even if I bump it to 2110 MHz on the core with 130% voltage and it will stay cool but when I bench it the GPU gets scores lower at a certain point even with higher clock speeds.

The card clocks are heavily dependant on the GPU temperature. You can achieve higher clocks by just increasing the fan speed.

By increasing voltage you also increase heat output and power requirements so depending on how good cooler you have, it may result in a worse clock speed.

I’m not having a problem with temps at all. I have the voltage set at 130% and even when I run Time Spy or play AAA games like Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry 5, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, etc., my GPU temps don’t go any higher than 67C.

I'm not saying you are thermal throttling. I'm just saying that the clocks go up when temp goes down. At 60°C you will have higher clocks than on 67°C.

To achieve the best OC you need to play with the voltage curve and fan curve and keep the voltage as low as possible for each clock step.

Edit...

I mean clocks as high as possible for each voltage step

keep it at 8000, some1 had memory at 8400 but after 6 months the card bricked, 2040 is average for a xc ultra, i've seen cards range from 1920-2250, though the higher end of that range is rarer.

Oh ok thanks. I think I can get it to about 2100 before it starts scoring lower than if it was at a lower speed. Temps are no problem though, even with fans at 50%.

Also mine is an XC2 Ultra if that makes a difference. It’s not the same as an XC Ultra but I don’t know if the difference between them affects overclocking just thought I should mention it.

it does make a difference, prolly a slightly better bin and maybe samsung memory, my release version is a crappy 1995/7600 micron, but i got it for cheap as a pre-order so there's that lol.

Oh yeah it’s definitely Samsung memory. I checked on GPU-Z. I figured there had to be something extra about it since it costs more than a Founder’s Edition even. It was $1,299 before tax so it should have some sort of performance benefit or premium components.

It seems rock stable to me, it doesn’t crash or anything even under full load. It just doesn’t score as high at 2150 as it does at 2050. ??‍♂️

If it’s not stable idk why. The temps are fine and I’ve never ever seen it above 73C under full load or above 67C while gaming.

well yeah the core is at 2150 but were is the memory clock they depend on each other higher core clock after a sertain point necerely mean higher memory clock and unfortunately there is no 'best' guide on how the offset of those 2 goes you will have to mess around a bit my 1060 is at 2008 core clock thats +300 and 9002 memory clock thats +994 and for what i see from gpuz i have a bit more room to squize it

Definition of a decent OC for a graphics card:

An OC that will result on a at least +10 FPS boost on your average frame rate compared to stock speeds while not bricking  the card due to high temperature or voltage and keep the fan noise to a tolerable degree while keeping computer general stability intact..

I think that this is how you should approach OC (and first of all ask if you need to OC) if you cant achieve that then what's the use of numbers? like e.g say you manage to increase 100Mhz on your GPU etc what's the point if the actual game difference is not noticable? In that case it would be just numbers on a chart... big deal..

Ohhh ok. Well I don’t know why it wouldn’t be stable. ? I mean the temps are fine so the only thing I can think of is that even with 130% power its still just not getting enough power to maintain a 2150 MHz clock speed. It tends to get the highest scores at about 2050 MHz core and 8000 MHz memory.

The power limit on your card should allow it to use about 350 watts. My XC uses about 347 watts with its maximum overclock.

Here is what it looks like.

XCoc2020max.thumb.jpg.9d8ddb14ab83ba90401926e4b346d86d.jpg

To run at 2150 mhz the temperature needs to be in the 30s.

That means water with a 240mm deadicated rad. So K|NGP|N.

With the overclock I use and all fans at max my FTW3 Ultra runs at 2100 mhz before it reaches 54c. It downclocks to 2085mhz after 54c and can maintain it until it reaches 62c and then it clocks down to 2070 mhz.   At 67c it downclocks again to 2055mhz.

I run the card with the default fan curve and it maintains 2055mhz at around 72c but at 74c it downclockes to 2040 mhz and that happens running games that use the CPU as well as the GPU(AC:O). It never goes below 2040mhz.

The FTW3 Ultra can use about 40 watts more than the XC but is limited by its cooling as well.

My 2 slot XC runs a bit hotter.  With my 24/7 overclock with the default fan curve it runs at 1935mhz at 81c.

Its cooling solution is inadequate(too noisy) for overclocking 24/7 so I usually run it at stock clock with 800 on the memory and 130% on the power limit and that is about 1875 mhz at 79c.

2080 tis performance depends on there cooling solution.

My XC can overclock higher on the GPU and memory but can never outperform my FTW3 Ultra because of its cooling solution.

That's kinda my point when I replied to OP.

You have all that power draw and potential instability + max fan speed and what's the end result?

Here is the same bench on a stock 2080 ti (FE)

1583596493018

And keep in mind that synthetic benchmarks are the best case scenario(notice that your lows are lower and that you have higher MAX which quite possibly was achieved on a specific region of the bench which ened up increasing your average FPS, I would like you to post some benchmarks of actual games because I am sure that the difference would be even lower.

for example (notice that the OCed card here is clocked even higher than yours)

Here is the 24/7 overclock on my XC. It uses the stock fan curve since it is too noisy for me with more.

I only use it only for RT games and AC:O and RDR 2. The rest of the time it is 0 on the clock.

XCoc2020.thumb.jpg.2d41153216610ac461815b688da668eb.jpg

The max overclock on the XC is not the highest it can go. It is the highest in can go without downclocking to the point that it actually runs slower. This happens at 84c. If the card was water cooled like the one in the video it would run about the same.

Heaven is kind of strange.

I use Heaven to simulate single CPU core games at low resolution.

I can't use the 1080p setting to compare the XC with the FTW3 Ultra since the FTW3 Ultra bottlenecks on it even with the i7 8086k at 5.1ghz.

It is sort of like the edge of a cliff. The XC is on the edge and the FTW3 Ultra goes right over.

Here is the XC running RDR 2 at 1440p and 4k using Hardware Unboxed settings, Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080p on the highest preset and AC:O at 1080p and 1440p in the ultra preset.  This is with the 24/7 overclock.

The FTW3 Ultra benches at 21:9 since it uses an ultrawide monitor.
