Upgrade Ryzen gen 1 to 3

Hey guys I currently rocking a Ryzen 1700 with a 350b tomahawk MB and a newly acquired 2080 super. I have been thinking about picking up a 3700x. Will I I see a noticeable FPS difference while gaming or would it not be worth the money?

It depends on the game or application.  When you play are you monitoring your CPU and GPU usage?  That could tell you how an upgraded CPU would affect things.

AMD confirms Ryzen 4000 CPUs will be out in 2020 – and probably that ‘Nvidia killer’ GPU too

Better off waiting for the Ryzen 4000 CPUs as they should be out soon

It depends, with no information on game, resolution, in-game settings and so on there's no way to tell.

Assuming 1080p, yes you would get better performance, only you can know if the difference is worth, but considering that you bought the 2080S I would assume that those 10% performance over the 2070S were important enough to pay a few hundred dollars, so yes it would probably be worth.

Assuming 4K, probably it would make almost no difference in most games. 1440p would be in between.

Personally I would wait for Zen 3 as it should be the last one on AM4 to get the best of the platform or get some cheaper Zen 2 option when it releases.

Don't waste money on 3rd gen, better wait for 4th gen.

With 2080 super you won't see any difference over 100+ fps.

The 1700 can still keep up with the gpu.

I agree on waiting for 4th gen. If anything, though, the 3600 (or its replacement) is probably a better choice if you're only gaming.

People think its gonna be as huge deal as 3rd gen but it won't. There was a lithography jump to 7nm with 3rd gen cpus. 4th gen will still be the same nanometer. Though regardless I'd also advise you to wait. To just see what will happen with 4th gen. Assuming corona won't kick the prices too high until then.

I think you'd get over 30% fps increase in most titles with the upgrade you mentioned. 2080 super is quite a few generations newer than first gen Ryzen and it's top of the line gpu while that cpu isn't.

Thnaks for all the information, I’ll wait for now, I haven’t seen my cpu at 100 usage but I just wasn’t sure if I’d see I big improvement with the faster gen3

That is why I was thinking about upgrading. 30% seems like a pretty good upgrade...

May still be 7nm, but it's also using some new UV thing and will be a little denser. Also, they are saying this is a completely new core design while second and 3rd gen have been revisions of the first gen.

I just want to get the most of my 2080, but also not buying a whole new  chipset, if I can just slide a new cpu in and I’m good to go, that would be ideal

Even if you don't see many extra frames I think it's fair to make the argument that you'll see "better" frames.  I'd imagine the frame pacing would be improved and the 1% lows to be increased.

Ryzen 3000 is second gen Ryzen while Ryzen 2000 is the gen+.  Ryzen 3000 was a new design.
