prebuild + gtx780 malfunction

Kasper_MC

Got a prebuild Lenovo S20 on the latest bios I could find, trying to get my old 780 up and running in it, just to see what happens to that combo.

I got a problem though, when I try to install the driver for the 780, both with GF-EX and just the driver from Nvidias webpage, it goes half-way through and then the screen goes black... The monitor doesn't say there's no signal, is on and running - but there's nothing on the screen.

I'm on a fresh install of windows 10 on a SSD. And I've tried both off- and online.

Does anyone have an idea what to try? Is the card dead or is there something fixable to do?

- I've tried both the displayport and the HDMI output.

Try it on a different computer and see if it does the same thing, if it does then it's the card, if it doesn't its something either with the Windows or hardware in the Lenovo.

Good thinking. Thanks!

Is this Lenovo S20 like one of those that came installed with Windows XP/Vista?

Something like this?

BIOS might be old enough to not properly support the GTX 780...just a guess.

But testing it in another system, to make sure the GTX 780 is actually healthy is a good start.

Also remember the GTX 780 requires a PCI-E 8-pin, and PCI-E 6-pin power connection.

(If you have an AIB version..it may be 2x PCI-E 8-pins instead).

Still haven't tested in another system... can't muster the energy to take my own computer apart :)

But, the S20 I have has a Windows 7 logo and the bios is from 2014 - so it's not that old... still old... but, I mean, I've had older :D

Also, the PSU I've got in the system is a 600w bronze, I think that should be enough, right?

Thanks for the responses - double biosflash did the trick, first to the oldest and then to the newest version for the 780 :)

Now I'm just waiting for the CPU upgrade for the little machine that could... Hopefully that will go less painfully :)

Again, thanks for the help!
