Laptop setup

AShadedBlobfish

I'm wondering if its possible for such a thing as a usb 3.1 to thunderbolt 3 adaptor to exist. I'm trying to recreate a similar system to the one in your video "No, this is the cleanest setup": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2VxwFEA8xM, but i don't have a thunderbolt 3 port on my laptop and don't want to buy a new one just for this purpose

You can buy USB3 and probably USB3.1 docks that can do much of the same as the dock used in that video. The one at my previous work place was working over USB2. It powered 2x1440p monitors just fine.

i am looking more into getting an external graphics card, but this should work for the rest. Thanks

There are quite a few versions of USB3.1, some close to Thunderbolt than others. Just something to keep in mind

this method should work for the monitors and peripherals but i am now looking for a usb external PCIe riser, for the graphics card. I have one in mind: https://www.amazon.co.uk/VILICONTY-Express-Riser-Adapter-Powered-6Pin-1x-16x/dp/B07657M9WQ/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=usb+3+pci+riser&qid=1582821795&sr=8-3 but could anyone possibly give me advice on whether that one will work or if not then any others i can try

I am reposting this since my requirements have now changed.

I am looking to create a system similar to the one in the video "NO, this is the cleanest setup." I do not have a laptop with a thunderbolt 3 port so i am in the middle of finding so work-arounds using USB 3.1, I have got my eyes on a PCIe Riser which plugs in via USB (designed for GPU mining but it should work just as well for this purpose):

https://www.amazon.co.uk/VILICONTY-Express-Riser-Adapter-Powered-6Pin-1x-16x/dp/B07657M9WQ/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=usb%203%20pci%20riser&qid=1582821795&sr=8-3&tag=linustechtips-21

I also have a USB 3.1 dock with space for hard drives, etc. along with a 1050ti GPU but I am looking for a solution to the fact that this GPU will require a power supply so I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for this. Also, could anyone recommend a 1080p 60Hz Monitor for me to use (i plan to use my laptop screen as a second monitor).

Please feel free to correct any of my interpretations or suggest considering a different part to the ones I already found. Thank you.

I think you're confused because those types of PCI-E riser cards (mainly used for mining) use the physical USB 3.x connectors and cable to connect their two pieces.

Nothing on those is electrically USB at all - they are only using the physical connectors and cable to send a 1x PCI-E signal between the small piece that goes on the motherboard and the larger piece that a graphics card connects to.

------------------

As far as an external graphics card over USB 3.1, it is physically possible but the results would be much worse than Thunderbolt 2 and Thunderbolt 3 external docks due to limited bandwidth and that USB is a serial connection.

Someone correct me if I'm recalling this wrong but devices on a serial bus all have inherent latency because the devices running on them are polled in series. A Thunderbolt-connected device essentially has direct PCI-E lanes (at least to the TB controller) which is not a serial connection and thus can make direct communication with the cpu at any time - kind of like how PS/2 keyboards/mice can interrupt the cpu to process their input at any time but a USB keyboard/mouse can't.
