Whats been your WORST computer related purchase?

nvidea 670 and a rosewill RX750-s-b were my 2 biggest regrets buying.

Pentium 3 450mhz at launch paid something like 4500 DKK for it and that is in 90´s money = aprox 750 dollars.

 

it was not a bad CPU, but a celeron 300A with a 450 mhz overclock which all of them ran, were just as fast in what i used that pc for..

 

it won all syntetics though, i think what made me accept it was that i bought a TNT 3400 ASUS card (i think it was a 3400 cant remember all the Geforce revisions) with it, and that boosted my pc quite a bit, but that card also ran great on my 233Mhz pentium 2, that i sold.

The trouble is, I live in the UK and the cables on Corsair's website were REALLY expensive, and it wasn't even clear if they were compatible, I think they wanted £28 a cable too, and i bought the PSU for £70. Also there was no possibilty of modding the cables as there was only the motherboad and gpu supplies coming from the PSU thanks to the m.2 hard drive.

 

In the end it was easier to just buy another.

 

Then the other day i found the original PSU cables so I sold the PSU on eBay for £60 so not too much of a problem after that.

buying a 6600k for almost 300$ vs a 6700k for like 40$ more when I was already going to wait on my monitor and GPU.

man do I wish that CPU had the extra threads.

along with that a better board the asus z170m plus from asus overclock horribly. I couldn't get more than 4.0 or 4.1 out of it.

When I bought my new HX750i (replace my previous Seasonic Focus Plus 650FX). Corsair website recommand me to use iCue. I downloaded it but this software isn't good because the informations are not complet. iCue can't read intensity informations, only voltage & wattage (any other softwares can to do it too). I uninstalled it and downloaded Corsair LINK software. Now, I have all informations from my new PSU

 

I don't know why Corsair recommand to use iCue which isn't good for RMi / HXi / AXi.

I imagine they mean cable mod as in the company CableMod who have regularly sponsored LTT for cables, often custom lengths, colours and styles.

They provide aftermarket cables for PCs. I've never needed to use them.

I bought an intel 3820 thinking that It would take months for me to find and buy a intel 3970X to replace it with. I bought the 3820, then very quickly found a 3970X( which I'm pretty sure came from the intel retail edge program) for a cheap price and bought that. I still have the 3820 lying around somewhere.

Mechanical keyboard was even worse. It was my very first mechanical keyboard, and I RMA'ed it five times, yes five freaking times in just eight months.

I think the worst one was buying a used i7 6700k $230 in april of last year, along with an h110 motherboard. I wasn't very good at PC building then.

Antec HCG 750W. Shorted and cost me a nice ASUS Z97 board and an i7-4790K in 2015. Antec's warranty support was hilarious: "You must have connected something incorrectly."

 

I went back to Fry's and they exchanged it, and I put the new one aside. I used the new one later in 2016 to patch up an HP Elite X58 desktop system, and the new one fried that motherboard. Ever since then, f**k Antec. I've got better things to do with my life than cook expensive hardware.

You can buy single cables from cable mod, they make custom cables, they don’t mod existing ones

You can get the mixed copper block and fan for those though to drop the noise level (Worked for me!) or half depth poweredge, (relatively quiet!)

 

Mine was a Linksys NSS4000 NAS. Absolute POS thats soon to be relegated to a backup file server. Slow read/write speeds, claims gigabit networking, never reaches it, SNMP doesn't work. UPS port is spotty at best, can't access the Linux terminal through SSH. Shoddy shoddy & expensive purchase.

 

Building my own file server on Server 2016 now to compensate and have useable fast storage!

I totally appreciate this conceptually.  People don’t knowingly buy bodged stuff though.  There are all these websites on repairing broken hardware that gets bodge fixed quite often and resold as “refurb”. This has mostly made me unwilling to buy “refurb” parts since what it used to mean “used parts brought up to new part standards” but what it seems to mean now is “bodge fixed”. Refurb used to mean better than used, but now it means worse.

Just remembered another one. Bought 16 Dell P4  Optiplex's off ebay for £120 quite a few years ago. 

 

That in itself isn't too bad. Easy flip for a couple of £ profit on each one. 

 

The problem was I didn't look at the location before bidding. It was a 300 mile round trip. 

 

Still got two left if anyone is interested.
