Need Help With Dual Monitor Setup From Laptop

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

So I have an Acer Aspire 7 A717-72G-700J, Its using the gtx 1060 6gb. It comes with an Hdmi 2.0 port, a usb 3.0 and usb 3.1 c gen 1. I plan on hooking up a 34 ultra wide monitor with 144 or 100hz directly with the Hdmi 2.0 and that should be fine. My questions would be: Is it possible for Usb 3.1C gen 1 to display at 4k 60hz? Would i need a usb 3.1C to hdmi 2.0 adapter to run a second monitor at 4k 60hz? If i can't run 4k 60hz with the USB-C, could I run 1080p 60hz or would it only be able to run at 30hz.

Only if there is Displayport Alt mode included in that port, which I do not see a mention of on the Acer website. Do check if there is a tiny Displayport logo next to the USB type C port:

Image result for displayport logo

Even then, it would be a guess if it will work at 4K60Hz.

3440*1440 or 2560*1080?

The 1440 UW can only do up to 100Hz on HDMI 2.0, 1080 UW can do 144Hz.

But those are theoretical numbers, I have seen devices not support the maximum theoretical before.

With USB 3.1 gen 1 speeds are 5Gbit/s which seems to cap adapters at 4k/30hz or 2k/60hz ... at least I've never seen an adapter that supported 4k/60hz on 5Gbit/s. Example: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Adapter-microSD-MacBook-Pixelbook/dp/B07H4VQ4BZ/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?ie=UTF8&aaxitk=Dd-wIgp7KCv6IH7s5fwS1g&hsa_cr_id=2572027100801&ref_=sb_s_sparkle

I'm fine with the 3440*1440 main monitor only going up to 100hz. Thank you for the help.

The second monitor I'm about to be handed turns out to be the AOC 2757 which is 1920 x 1080p. Thankfully that should be able to run the 60hz. Thank you for letting me know the caps the adapters are at, it'll be useful for the future

Are you sure this works on a USB type C 3.1. Gen 1/3.2 Gen 1 port without Displayport alt mode/Thunderbolt?

This will not work with OP's laptop, unless it has that displayport logo I mentioned in my post (quoted below)

See the System requirements of this device:

Please check if your laptop has that little Displayport logo next to the USB Type C port before buying the adapters linked by the other users.

That first link I am not positive about, but the link below I actually own and use on a laptop with usb type C 3.1 gen 1 that I am sure does NOT support the display port alt mode, but the HDMI adapter on the unit will drive a 4k monitor, at 30hz of course.

Huh, alright.

I see the manufacturer on this page only mention devices with either DP alt mode Type C ports or Thunderbolt type C laptops (which Thunderbolt has Displayport built in).

What I also saw listed was this:

Quote

HooToo Hub is based on Type-C standard protocol (USB 3.1, PD 3.0, DP 1.2).

But that may just be marketing talk..

If you say your laptop does NOT have Diisplayport alt mode or Thunderbolt and it still works, that would be a good feature for an adapter.

@minibois You may be right about this. I double checked the manufacturer page of my laptop and the exact wording they used was: "1 x Type-C™ USB 3.1 Gen 1 with support for external display", but the emblem on the side of the laptop does not have the DisplayPort logo. So that adapter may not work with plane usb type c 3.1g1. I checked systems in my house and the only type C port that doesn't have the DisplayPort is that laptop in question.

Edit:

Also taging OP for clarity @Sleiph

Appreciate all the clarification help that you guys posted, the type c port doesn't have the DisplayPort logo and doesn't support tb3. Trying to scour other places for help too. Appreciate any other words you guys have for me.
