Issue with SSD upgrade for a laptop

str4vag

So, I was upgrading my wife laptop with a new SSD. My steps were:

1. Connect original hdd and SSD to my desktop

2. Clone the HDD (windows partition) to the SSD using macarium

3. plug in SSD to laptop and boot up.

4. Verified windows boot was working.

5. Created a new partition on the SSD from the laptop.

After that, I reconnected the SSD to my desktop to copy back files from the old HDD (Data Partition). Completed the copy. Verified the data was there.

After copying was done. I plus the SSD back in and rebooted to windows. But the Data partiton on the SSD was blank.

Anyone can explain what happened? Anyone can help me get the files to appear again?

Not sure what happened there. Was the partition recognized in the file explorer?

You can also try to copy the data partition with the ssd installed in the laptop and connecting the hdd externally. That's how I did it with my laptop.

Current desktop: (Optiplex 9020 MT)

CPU: i7-4790 | GPU: Gigabyte GTX970 ITX | PSU: EVGA BT 450W Bronze | Ram: 2x8gb DDR3 1600MHz

The build: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1158091-optiplex-9020-mt-project-build-i7-4790-gtx-970

Future plans:

  • i7-4790k
  • Z97 motherboard (really want a ASUS ROG Maximus VII Formula Watch Dogs Z97 ATX motherboard)
  • + 2x8gb ram (for a total of 32gb)
  • Better gpu
