Can a 18-20 year old person make more than minimum wage as a job? Such as programming? Or any job. Would an employer ever pay more??

Can’t remember what minimum wage I’m was last but it was different levels of pay between like 18-20 or whatever who get less

 

so it’s literally always going to be minimum wage until your older than whatever it was who gets the highest minimum wage and then you can get big pay rises in jobs that pay 50k or whatever? Or can you still make that if your good

Uh in uk the younger you are the LESSER they CAN pay you or minimum wage however idk about if you can get paid more because companies take advantage of it

Yea I cant speak on that as im not in the UK.

 

Just look for jobs in your area and then ask them what the pay is.

If you’re in the USA yes.  Go to a tradesman guild and apply as an apprentice.  Above minimum right off the bat. Brick workers/Masons are generally always hiring.   Work is hard of course.  Your hands will get dirty.  If you’re not afraid of that though there are some really decent jobs out there.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

If you have the education for a range of jobs, there's no way you'd be paid minimum wage.

Sure if you go work in a grocery or something, don't expect a high wage. But if you've studied in, say, IT. You'll be getting the wage of a new hire in IT without experience(which can vary depending on the employer and position), not "minimum wage" which is basically bottom of the barrel.

 

 

Heck, even without education, there's plenty jobs above minimum salary. Be it in maintenance (cleaning offices as a janitor for example), warehouse work, etc...

I worked at costco when i was a kid, and made $11/hr when state minimum wage was $6?

Learn a trade, get good, get paid. Everyone wants to work with computers, stiff competition.. Tradespeople get old and retire, not many kids want to work these days, so those positions don't always get refilled. Pay off school quick because debt wont be mega high, and your laughing.. good help is hard to find, and there is money to be made.

Back in the 70’s my dad mentioned that while he had 2 phDs the carpenter he hired got paid better than he did as long as there was work.  The only advantage my dad’s job had was that he still had work even when the economy was bad.

There is no law that determines your pay based on age. The only thing I can think of is if you are under 18 you can't work more than 40 hours and they can also pay you opportunity wage for 6 months which is around half of what minimum wage is in your state.

White collar work doesn't really feature in the top rankings for injuries or deaths, it's all manual labor.

Depends.  Doctors and cops are definitely near the top of the list.  Blue collar work used to be more dangerous and white collar work used to be less dangerous.  These days it’s more by specific profession.

Tbh Roofing was one of the best jobs I ever had.

 

$15 an hour under the table. Basically bullshitting and drinking with your coworkers all day. It was great. Now this isnt with some corporate company of course.

 

The heat sucks but if you can stand it its a great way to make fast money.

They just made roofing safety harnesses mandatory in my area.  Roofing companies bitched like mad till they actually bought the equipment and saw how much their insurance bills went down.  Then they were kicking themselves for not doing it earlier.

I was making $11.50 at 19-20, some friends were making $15/hour as technicians building and repairing medical equipment and are making far more in the same job after experience, and some other friends were making $54+k/year as programmers at 20.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Yes, at least it is for Australia I am not sure how it works with the UK. With Junior wages you pretty much lose 10% off the minimum wage per year you are under 21. So a 17 year old's minimum wage is 60% of the normal minimum wage which would work out to be like $11/hr or something. Keep in mind Australia's minimum wage is higher than most minimum wages in USA to begin with. It's something like $18 or $19 per hour minimum wage, which once converted is about $12-$13 USD I believe.

 

That only applies to minimum wage though, the minimum amount that can be paid. Nothing stopping the employer from paying more than minimum wage. That's also the base wage and doesn't count things like overtime, Sunday penalty rates, public holidays, etc. Also casual employees (what most people under 18 are) receive loading on top of base wage of 20% I think, but they also lose a lot of entitlements that permanent staff receive like paid holidays, sick leave, guaranteed hours, set roster, etc.

I live in Florida, and have never worked minimum wage. Minimum wage is $8.46 an hour, and I made $10/hr literally sweeping floors and taking out trash.

US minimum wage is largely a brutal joke because inflation goes up but minimum wage doesn’t.  In the equivalent pay when it was set current minimum wage is something around $5.   A $10/ hr job is below minimum in the currency it was originally set at.

It depends on the state here in the U.S. Where I'm at, I get paid 16$ an hour, 5$ above the minimum wage. It depends on your job and what you do. Age has nothing to do with it.
