Things to do with my server.

EricTrujillo

So guys I'm sitting on a super hot rod machine here with dual Xeons, 40 gigs of RAM and 8TB of storage and it barely gets any use, other than a Plex server.

My bass player said something to me at rehearsal about starting a web hosting service and using the rest of the horsepower on this thing.

Is it doable?

Yes its doable, but I think porn is a better money maker.

Is it at your place or in an datacentre? What badnwith and infrastructure?

TBH WebHosting services already have big players, at least where i live, so getting into it commericially makes no sense at my location unless you are also providing the software or have many contacts.

But here are some ideas i did on my server:

1) Get into a programming language and start collecting data. For example job offers, then do analysis on it yourself or sell access to it.

2) Create a VPN for yourself you can use in insecure networks.

3) Create a preload/download server for steam and stuff (only really viable if the machine is at your place/network)

4) Create a homepage for yourself (or others and let them crowd pay your server and managing)

5) Create free of charge micro web services, could slap ads on them later (Like free webspace, url shortener and so on).

6) Install something like nextcloud for example

I ask that question myself a lot and it lead me to code a lot of useful tools that assist my daily tasks.

Edit: If you are a music collector, my next project is to setup an private FOSS spotify like service for my collection of local files.

I am NOT a native english speaker and use translate a lot, please do not take it literally and bear with me.

Are you talking about hosting porn, or making porn?

Ok, I need to research FOSS, because I've been looking for a replacement for Apple Music for my music collection, and I could just use my server space for that, I'd be into it.

Unfortunately I don't, but I did look into it and I'm in love with the idea. I think its fantastic what that project is doing.

Hehe by FOSS i mean Free Open Source Software, the software i am going to use for it is actually called koel and based on Laravel (PHP).

I have no clue about it's quality and i think other languages would be better suit but i also personally work with Laravel so i think it is worth for me to check it out :)

No because your ISP will cancel your service. Most if not all ISP's have it in their TOS about Acceptable Usage Policy. Running internet facing servers is considered a NO NO. Most people get away with it due to low bandwidth consumption. But once they see your bandwidth usage spike, they will call and threaten to cut you off.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
