You can plug your PC directly into basically any router that I've seen in the last 15 years (ish?). 5-year old router (depending on model of course) doesn't sound too bad to me.

What do you want him to get instead? It is either ethernet or wifi, and your router now likely has ethernet so you won't need a wifi card.

Tell him about a cool search engine called Shodan. It's a mine for exploited routers.

A snakey boi is ALWAYS better than wi-fi.

So if you can go wired, do it.

You can always turn off wi-fi if you want...

Does the router and/or modem in question not have an Ethernet port?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Any router from the last ~10 years likely works fine, and as long as the modem supports the full speed of the internet your paying for, it’s fine as well.

If your modem and router are physically far from your room, you just need to run a wire...

That doesn't matter, a cheap modem can drive an online gaming experience no problem. I bought the cheapest 4 port Arris modem I could get my hands on and it handles the 100mb connection from comcast pretty flawlessly.

My modem is over 5 years old. As long as it’s rated for the speed tier your subbed to it’s fine ( mind you have a modem not a gateway so the modem and router are separate boxes) Routers on the other hand I’d like to stay at least with in a generation of the new WiFi standard.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Doesn't sound like it's a wireless issue or an old router one either. Sounds like you just want the modem hard wired to your own room so you have the fastest wired connection you can get for gaming. And to that, i would say the same thing I would say to my own kid. Deal with it. I pay the f'ing internet bill and you can either buy a wifi card and use that or just not use it. Wouldn't that just piss you off if he bought a brand new one to replace the old one and left it where it was? Nothing would have changed by doing so but he could enjoy your seething entitlement.
