Possibly dead Corsair HX1200i

ElMachoBurg

Hey there,

so this morning I went to turn on my PC and as soon as I flipped the PSU switch there was a fairly loud noise comming from it, didn't see any sparks or smoke and nothing smells weird, but my computer won't boot now, the LEDs on my motherboard kinda turn on and then off repeatedly, I turned everything off and let it sit there for the day, then I check back later and still no boot, so I unplug everything and try the paper clip thing, nothing happens, I plug in a molex fan and still nothing, I get my multimeter out and measure voltage on every pin, no voltage on any pins other than pin 9 (standby +5V). The PSU was bought 8 months ago and was currently running an i7 6700K and and RX 480 (I know it's overkill but originally intended to use it for something else).

So the question is what can I do with this now and has this happended to any of you before?

And if in the end I need to RMA should I send it to Amazon or to Corsair?

yeah, component failure happens to everyone once in a while

since it's been 8 months, I highly doubt Amazon would service it.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Corsair, amazon won’t care at this point.

in my experience Corsair customer support is top notch. IIRC, they have cross shipped me PSU’s before. That way you get a new one before you have to send the defective one back.

Corsair is probably the best place to get in touch. Ask if you can still get a warranty on it as psu failures at 8 months are pretty rare especially on high end models.

Is that something you normally do, flip the power switch on the PSU on and off every day?

Yes, it is my second computer and I don't have a case for it right now, so it's basically the motherboard resting on top of a cardboard box on my desk and the PSU next to it, and as I have no power switch connected to the motherboard I set the bios to power on after ac restore so whenever I wanna use it I just turn the PSU on and everything powers on.

Well that could explain why it failed prematurely.

In future just use a metal object like the tip of a screwdriver or key to bridge the power switch pins on the motherboard front panel connectors. That will send the signal to the motherboard to turn on.

Really?

What's wrong with doing that?

What do you mean when you say Amazon won't care or won't service it, it's not like they have choice (right?), this PSU has a warranty and they have to do something about it (right?)

lot more opportunities for damage. When  you screw everything into a case, many components all get grounded to the case via motherboard standoffs, brackets, and such. Then the case drains into the power supply via the power supply screws and also just the fact that power supply housing makes contact with the case and then it all gets discharged by the power cord into the wall.

The warranty is issued by the manufacturer, not distributor. Amazon only cares if it is within the return window.

The high inrush current can damage the PSU over time. PSUs are designed to be plugged in with the switch on all the time.

Amazon doesn’t provide a warranty on things they sell. The manufacturer of the parts provides the warranty. Amazon is just a service to get the part to your door.
