Delivering future capability upgrades to global and regional ocean and atmospheric prediction systems, to include later this year the Navy’s first Earth Systems Prediction Capability,” Cray signed three high-performance computing contracts with the US military worth more than $71 million back in August. Another Cray Shasta supercomputer was acquired by the US air force, while the Army Research Lab (ARL) and the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) will each get a Cray CS500 cluster supercomputer.

 

My Thoughts:

As far as I'm aware, this will be the first top 20 supercomputer built using AMD's Epyc CPUs, and one of the very few AMD supercomputers to have currently rolled out (with the first top 100 AMD based computer being France's CEA/TGCC-GENCI). I won't be surprised if we start seeing a lot more Epyc based supercomputers in the near future.

Might be how stuff is counted.  I’m not sure how different “american boasting” is different from any other country’s boasting.  Marketing is everywhere.  It’s a big computer.  What “ranking” a top tier computer has has always been famously a bit vague because it depends on how things are counted.  One machine might have more processors, another might have more cores, another might have more threads, yet another might have more total IPS, etc..

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I know someone who did this.  It wound up working very well I think. IT in the navy is often MilInt.  You will need to be able to pass some serious background checks.  They like unixes there, and the hardware can be old.  He did his 20 and liked it.  Wasn’t always comfortable.  The was talk about a stint in a skif in Kabul he wasn’t super fond of.  He also did a good deal of time in Hawaii though.  There was a lot of stuff he couldn’t talk about “secret squirrel stuff”. Being a spooky squid is a good way to live a life I think.  Get paid well, have a respectable profession.  You retire in your 40’s with a pension, and can do more or less what you’d like with the rest of your life.

They all use Linpack numbers, or theoretical Linkpack numbers based off a smaller POC deployment and scale it. Number of components doesn't change how Rmax or Rpeak is calculated or represented but these basic Linpack numbers are useless for anything other than peacocking for the top 500 lists.

 

Different configurations run different workloads better than others, you can have a system with half the Rmax out performing another simply because that other system was designed to run something else.

ARM are still developing.  Future projections (if realized) make 14Pflops look like an old celeron.
