Modern and retro Gaming on a CRT in 2020

IsaacG

I recently purchased a Dell e773c CRT for 10 dollars and have been loving it for my playthrough of the half-life games, as well as for playing modern games like rdr2. I was curious what other people are still using

a CRT monitor in 2020, and any issues or interesting things they have run into while using them, as I am new to this whole cathode ray tube thing.

Having grown up using them, I can honestly say... screw that. I hope they stay dead. CRT can stay in the past, all hail to my flat LCD panel masters.

In all honesty I see why not everyone should have one, but I still think running at lower resolutions and high refresh rates can be great if you have an older gpu and the patience to deal with the monster.

For modern gaming only top end CRTs are generally considered as they can manage high resolutions and refresh rates, not to mention usually come in bigger sizes (for CRTs) up to 22".

The most well known example is the super rare king of CRTs, the Sony GDM-FW900. a 16:10 22" Monster that can handle above 1080p resolutions and high refresh rates.

E.G 2304 x 1440 at 80hz., or 1920 x 1200 at 96hz. Other combinations ofc viable.

The FW900 and other CRT of similar quality can destroy LCD monitors in regards to be able to game with zero input lag, and instant pixel response, at higher refresh rates, whilst also retaining great image quality thanks to good contrast ratios and black levels. CRT also have a natural softness to their image which some people very much like.

Well for like fast shooters especially better CRT with higher refresh rate is quite awesome and better than LCD in terms of motion clarity.

I use my CRT for pretty much all of my modern games on PC and for when I edit my poor quality videos. I love how nice every thing looks in my games and how very pleasing to the eyes it is with beautiful colors and no motion blur.

As far as issues go, brightness can lower over the years if used way more than normal and it can be hard to find some one who can re-calibrate the monitor if you do not want to try it your self because of high voltage and stuff.

Also some good CRT monitors can be overclocked to crazy high refresh rates, for example I pushed my Hitachi Gateway VX900 to 175Hz, that is not bad for something I found in the trash.

CRT basically has all the advantages of OLED, plus the advantage of not having square pixels.

I did use CRT long into the LCD era but I stopped once I got some decent IPS LCDs.

And today I just use OLED. If I want the CRT style effect I just take off my glasses and turn on BFI.

I was playing rdr2 and having no LCD motion blur on my crt at 75hz actually made the game feel almost stuttery when riding a horse ;) I ended up turning on the nice per object blur in the game and it looks just a little smoother. I guess I just need to get used to the crt master race life.

The stuttering may be from a rapid fluctuation in the frame rate of the game, I heard RDR2 does not run perfect on every system and turning V sync on or locking the frame rate may help.

Do the other games work fine, or maybe it is just RDR2?

Check frame times not frame rate. All it takes is a single frame to cause a stutter .

I will check that out tomorrow, but given this monitor is kinda low end it could also be some sort of artifact caused by the vga cable
