Ryzen 5 3600X vs. 3600 for new build?

Hi all, 

 

I'm planning a new build which will be used for gaming (mostly CS:GO, Tarkov, and Cyberpunk, when it comes out), and some light video and photo editing (mostly for school projects).

 

For my GPU, I've decided to go with an RTX 2070 Super from EVGA, but I'm having a bit of trouble deciding on a CPU.

 

Should I go with the 3600X, or the 3600? 

 

The 3600X is currently $269.00

at Canada Computers ($60 off), while the 3600 is currently $239.00 ($40 off).

 

Is it worth the extra $30 for the 3600X? I'm not planning to overclock very much, but it feel like the unlocked multiplier would be useful for future-proofing my system.

If you're not planning to add an aftermarket cooler then the 3600X does have a somewhat better cooler. If you are planning to go with an aftermarket cooler then just go with the 3600 and overclock it like a 3600X.

Thanks for the reply. I was planning to go with the included Wraith cooler, so that seems to be a point in favor of the 3600X. I can always upgrade if it gets too hot, and fan noise isn't a huge issue for me.

For those 30$ you can get Cooler Master Hyper 212 which is a great cooler, much better than the stock one

or something similar, lots of options

+ any aftermarket cooler looks way better inside the case than the stock one

If you're not overclocking and don't care about noise...I guess the more expensive one would be fine?

If you're not in a hurry to build we're only about 4 months away from new releases of everything. I'd personally just wait, and grab the newer stuff.

Ehhh the 212 is an old news cooler and not really worth the money at that point.

Huh. I was not aware of this. I guess I'm just better off waiting, then. Are Ryzen Gen 4 and new Nvidia cards coming out at around the same time? Those are the two things I'd probably want to watch for.

Yeah, they pretty much always release around the summer. CPUs are yearly, GPUs biyearly (roughly), so the GPU is going to be the big plus this year. If you're getting an Nvidia card for RTX, their RTX performance is supposed to be doubled (or more) with these new cards, so definitely worth waiting for. Even if that wasn't the aim, you'd basically be paying 2070S pricing for what will have the performance of a 3060 in a few months. The CPU, while not a massive leap in performance, will still see a bit of a gain.

 

If you really wanted to get the most value, after they're released Black Friday is only a few months away.
