Anyone using WD purple as data/storage disk?

alex13267

Currently I have 2 WD 4tb purple lying around. can I use it in my desktop like a normal HDD?

I have lots of pictures, videos ,mp3 files and other important files. Yes I know that the purple drive are best for surveillance storage but wanna know if it can be used like a traditional hdd with no issues

Thanks

I did. Don't.

The random speeds were trash and the actuator was loud on random seeks. Keep those disks in surveillance/CCTV systems.

Of those two, the Reds.

If you're just going to use it as "PURE" storage, then fine. But if you're gonna plan watching movies from the drives, it's gonna be bad depending on how big your movie file is.

Watching what is stored on it won't be the problem; writing to the drive will. Surveillance drives have no error correction becasue they receive a live stream. If an error in writing happens (which is more common than you may think), a normal drive will try to write again to correct the error. This is fine because the file being written to it is static and can wait for the error correction with no data loss However, a surveillance drive is receiving a continuous live feed and any delay in writing, such as to correct an error will cause it to get behind the live feed and will never catch up. This is acceptable and necessary) for surveillance systems but will allow too many errors when writing other data to the drive.
