"smudge" on laptop screen

Hi everyone,

Recently I noticed a "smudge" appeared on my laptop screen, where a small portion of the screen appears to leak more light from the backlight when displaying white color.

After some research I though it could be the polarizing filter failing, but I am not sure if that is the case since it is a wild assumption on my part.

I'm attaching some pictures to hopefully showcase the problem, but it is very hard to catch on camera.

 

If it is indeed the polarizing filter (and even if it isn't), is my only option to replace the panel itself?
