2080Ti in 2020, Worth it?

DxRalph

Hi everyone,

I think the title says it all. I want to get a 2080ti but i am not sure it is still worth it in 2020 with potential new cards coming out in the near future. Let me know! Thanks.

You can also get a 2070S, which is almost as good as a 2080 (non TI) and as good as 1080Ti, for $400 to $500. I think it is the best bang for the buck right now.

If you don't care about RTX, then get a used GTX 1080Ti. If you do care about RTX, then get a RTX 2070 Super or 2080 Super.

so to add, i am looking to play 4k games with the gpu. i dont believe that the other gpus mentioned can reach 4k at 60fps.

Speaking of 30 series, when are we likely to see these? Thanks guys

They definitely can, as long as you're willing to tweak some settings. If you're looking to run everything at max on 4k, then you're out of luck, because nothing can run everything at 4k60fps with everything set to Ultra. The 2080 Ti can barely run 1080p 60fps if you enable ray tracing, for example.

Make sure to quote or tag me (@JoostinOnline) or I won't see your response!

How was it the past, when NVIDIA announced new gpus. How long did it roughly take till they finally released them? If they decide to announce new models at GTC in march, can we maybe expect them in early Q3, or later?

So.. i've been bitten by the bug recently and have owned the following over the last 2 months:

Sold my 1070 for £240 on ebay and bought a 2070 Super for £480 including COD/MW (which I was going to purchase anyway) so call it £450. The 2070 was a good match to my 3440x1440 100hz monitor. However I was playing Metro Exodus at the time and didn't rate the RTX performance or the impact DLSS had on image quality.  It also was good but not great at 4k on my living room OLED but not able to hold 60fps at the settings i'd be happy with. Wasn't a great chip ether so was never truly happy with it.

A 2080 Super appeared on Facebook marketplace for £480 so I jumped at that and sold the 2070 Super for £440 so a £40 upgrade. Now the 2080 Super overclocks very well on the memory. At this point I also fitted a Kraken G12 and was running 2050mhz on the core. This was killing everything I played at 4k/60 bar metro but I was really happy with it.. Until one day the fan adaptor from GPU fan header to standard fan header somehome broke and caused one of my fans to spin up to 100%. Stupidly during my investigations I unplugged the fan from the header and then reattached it.. while the PC was turned on.. Idiot.. fried my 2080 Super...  Gutted.

I had to claim on the house insurance and they've just paid out £630. I've just won a Gigabyte 2080 Ti Gaming OC for £710 which is arriving tomorrow so £80 upgrade.

I'll report back how it performs in 4K because TBH the 2080 Super overclocked was ample. I just thought i'd make the most of a bad situation.

I've probably not answered your question there but despite the bad youtube videos if you can source a 2080 Super for a good price and overclock it you'll be very happy at 4k/60

^^^ My RVII (around 2070S/2080 level perf) will keep Far Cry 5 with everything slapped to max running at 4K just fine. In Destiny 2 and Assassin's Creed Odyssey I have to drop some stuff, but mostly useless things and a little bit of shadows, which make for 0 drop in visible quality unless you take screenshots and compare the stills side by side. Most games don't use over 8GB VRAM (or on an 8GB card will keep themselves below that) for ultra textures at 4K as well, so you're not limited by the VRAM on the 2070S/2080. I know some newer titles like COD:MW and RDR2 are super demanding though, so if you're looking to max those games out you'll have a tough time.

IMO the 2080 ti is only worth it at 4K. For 1440p, sure the 2080 ti is still the best performance card, but you can get cards that have good 1440p performance for half the price or less. I don't feel like it's worth spending an extra $500 to play RDR2 at 100 fps instead of 75 fps on a 2070 Super.

i think the biggest question I have is, should i consider the 2080ti now or just wait until nvidia decides to release the 30 series? i heard they may be announcing them around June

It really depends on your current situation / available cash

As of right now is probable Nvidia will announce Ampere (3000 series GPU) at GTC 2020 in March, with release in later months. My bet is about september near the release of Cyberpunk 2077.
