GTX 1080 + i5-7600k

Hey, so I'm about to purchase a GTX 1080 and I'm wondering if my current specs will bottleneck my 1080. I'm currently running: 

 

i5-7600k (Willing to overclock)

16gb 2400mhz RAM 

1080p 144hz Monitor

 

If the 7600k isn't enough, please let me know what would be good to upgrade + if overclocking would make it adequate.

It will bottleneck quite a bit. Look for a used 6700K or move to a 3600

You'll have a huge CPU bottleneck, especially in modern games.

 

To properly utilize the GTX 1080 on 1080p, you'd need to change your platform to something newer.

And since you're aiming for high refresh, I have to recommend Intel.

Intel i7 9700K or the older i7 8700K paired with a Z370 or Z390 and 16 or more GB of RAM.

Depends on the games but the stuff I play is cpu intensive. Cod and bf games so my 8700k gets very high usage, on certain maps hit 100% and cause a stutter.

If he's changing platforms intel makes no sense. He's need an expensive board, more costly cooling and all that for a 3-4% performance edge over a 3600/3700X. Ryzen 3000 is superior currently. It runs cooler, uses far less power, offers the same or better performance and doesn't suffer from the dozen or so severe intel security issues.

At this time, Intel still provides higher max framerate and decent averages.

At a 3% difference, that's within a margin of error for most testing. The averages between the two are very similar as well. Paying an extra 60-120% price for less than 3% improvement isn't a good idea.

I'm getting vastly different answers. I look online and one "bottleneck calculator" says I'm at 35% bottleneck whilst another says everything will work great, most forums when googling this say a 7600k should be fine and here some say a 7600k is fine and others say it will be absolutely horrible. Changing everything would be a huge pain in the arse especially with the cost of all of this. Is it actually that bad? I'm on a tight budget and I can deal with a little less FPS whilst I wait to get a better CPU.

Either one of those options is about as expensive as buying a 2700x and a B450. And as far as I know the 3600 is meant to be about as good as a 2700x whilst being more efficient and whatnot? And like I said in another reply, I'm on a tight budget which is why I ask is it really as bad as you say it is.

The 3600 is better for your intended use - gaming - due to the much higher single core performance AND exceptional multi-core performance. The bottleneck is indeed quite bad. i5s are dead and have been for a good while (3 years or so) - hell, even my 8th gen i7 is occasionally maxed in some games. a 4/4 CPU with a 1080 is about the same as a 1660 Ti with a 4/4 CPU - it will be horridly bottlenecked. Your CPU is only as good as a i3 8350K...

The 7600k, while decent for general computing, is really not up to modern gaming levels. It can hold you over while you save up for a new CPU and motherboard, but you really do need to move to a CPU with at least 8 threads to be able to game smoothly on modern games.

 

The 3600 has a significantly better single-core performance than the 2700x, and games are not able to use the additional cores of the 2700x to make up the difference. A 3600 with an X570 motherboard will likely set you back about $350. (you can use the same RAM you already have as long as it's DDR4)

Surely X570 isn't neccesary? I can get a 3600 for about £145 and a B450 board for about £50-£60. About £200 or $260 in your money. As a side question, is there a worthy CPU I could get on my current platform? Any save in money would be nice.

 

Another point to add on is that I have access to a 2600x on a B450 board. Would that be as awful?

Not necessary per-se, but it greatly expands your upgrade potential further down the line. (4th and 5th Gen Ryzen are supposed to be fully supported on it, but not always on B450/X470)

Unfortunately not one that is likely to save you a significant amount of money.

A 2600X is not all that great for gaming... The performance is about 10% lower than the 3600. It can mean the difference between having smooth high framerates, and having lag spikes with lower framerates.

I am 100% going to upgrade to a 3600, but I am able to get a 2600x off a friend for nothing in the mean time. I should've been more clear in my message, but what I was asking is that with a 2600x would I see better performance than with my 7600k? Again, to clarify this is temporary whilst I wait for my 3600.

All 3 chips are on that list, so you can see exactly what the performance difference is between them all.
