Buy GPU now or wait for 3000 series

The last time I built myself a PC, I got a 9600gt (yes it was long ago). A month or so later the waaaaay better GTX cards came out. 

 

Now I am building myself a PC again, and was looking at 2070 super. The question is: do I go for it, or should I wait for 3000 series which is promised to be a way better price/performance card in like 6 months.

if you can wait, and have the budget. seems to me like its the wise thing to do

Not really, I just thought it would be a good time to upgrade my 4y old gaming laptop, so I can probably wait a bit more if 3000 series is expected to be a good upgrade.

being 2nd try on RTX it should bring good performance, but maybe not good prices. We'll see.

Wait for 4000 series.

If we knew 7nm Ampere gaming gpus were coming it would probably be a no-brainer to wait for Computex. As things stand the only gpu have heard anything credible about on Ampere 7nm is GA100, so we could be looking at another Volta situation again where there were no gaming cards. If that's the case we'd probably just get a Turing refresh this summer/fall, and maybe the $500 2070 Super becomes a $400 3060. In that case I don't think it would be worth it to wait 5-6 months just to save $100. I wish I had a good guess one way or the other since I have been eyeing a 2070 Super too, though I think I'm going to wait since my current cpu will bottleneck the hell out of it anyways and not sure I'm ready to do a full platform + gpu upgrade yet.

Considering the 20xx super series was already more or less a refresh, I would be disappointed if they don't give us some good breadcrumbs at GTC. And after all, even if 3060 is a 400$ refreshed 2070 super, I can just get a 2070 super then for 1/2 price I guess. I don't know, it seems that most speculations aim at Ampere gpu. And if that fails, there is always a chance that the AMD's promised "Nvidia killer" will come soon.

 

I guess we all play the wait game.

Can't really trust AMD's hype from their gpu division after lies such as "overclocker's dream" tbh. If AMD wants an Nvidia killer they should fix their drivers for the 5700 series and sell them at midrange prices.

^^^Exactly. I run an RVII, it's only an "overclocker's dream" when you actually get drivers that are stable, that also have a working version of Wattman, that also don't break MSI Afterburner if Wattman isn't working. For me that's the last set of Adrenaline 2020 WQHL Recommended drivers, I'll need to DDU again and revert to that if I wanna do more bench runs.

Nobody has promised better price/performance yet. There is only speculation with no hard facts. With that said, at this late date, I would personally wait.

I'm in the same boat as you but it's better to wait for options, I doubt the price of current cards will increase so just stick it out.
