LG Gram sent in for repair, data was wiped.

Who has had this experience before? I bought an LG Gram through Amazon Warehouse (yes I'm aware that I could've gotten a defective machine like I did in this case, and I would be okay with that) and it arrived defective.

 

I opened up a case with LG and they sent me a label to send my laptop in, and no where in the e-mailed or paperwork did they say they would wipe my machine. Has anyone experienced this issue before? They swapped out my motherboard so is there a chance they didn't wipe it and just swapped the whole unit out?

I know Apple always says to back up your machine before sending it in because they may wipe it. It isn't an uncommon practice. I believe in the US it may even be required due to consumer privacy laws, but don't quote me on that.

This is incredibly normal. Especially if you had a password on the machine and did not provide it.

I would also be STUNNED if this was not in their terms and conditions that you agreed to when you sent the laptop in. Every service center I've worked with includes that as standard practice.

I work in I.T. (I should have definitely know better, I don't disagree), but with Dell when you send in a machine they have an option saying what to do with your data/do not wipe iirc.

 

I should have been more cautious for sure, especially being in I.T. – live and learn I guess.

That your data gets wiped should be expected when sending a machine in for repair. For security reasons they'll have to do this and to be honest I think it's quite laissez-fair of yourself to not secure erase your stuff before sending it in. Also, you should always keep a backup of your data anyways.

The drive was bitlockered, and I should've had a backup. Though, I did have a saving grace -- this laptop was a replacement of another laptop that died so I just transferred the data from it to the gram. Luckily, I didn't loose too much data since I still had the old drive.
