two options: overclock mhz or tighten the timing - G.skill Ripjaws

I am building a new rig with Ryzen 5 3600 and was looking for best ram, however G.Skill KIT Ripjaws V 3600mhz CL16 has sold out completely in my area.

 

I now have two options:

G.Skill KIT Ripjaws V 3400 CL16

G.Skill KIT Ripjaws V 3600 CL18

 

What would be better (or easier - never overclocked ram before), OC the 3400mhz -> 3600mhz or tigthen timings on CL18. Should I even bother doing either?

3400 CL16 should be a better bin, even if you're still getting the same die types

Those kits are bad.

 

Try finding 3200 CL14(Trident Z red) or 4000 CL19(Patriot Viper Steel).

anything 4000mhz is way out of my budget, and so is anything under CL15 .. however I did manage to find G.Skill Trident Z Neo Series 3600 CL16, this should be a sweet spot if I understand correctly?

i mean, 3400c14 is better than 3200C14. and ryzen doesn't really benefit from 4000.

There was never any talk of 3400 CL14.

 

4000mhz advertised doesn't mean you have to run it at 4000mhz. You can scale it down to a nice 3600 CL14/15 or 3866 CL16/17.

sorry, just saw, it was 3400c16. and yes, you're right. but it makes like 1% difference most of the time and usually the kits you talk about are very expensive.

Well, the Patriot Viper Steel 4000 mhz kit was rather cheap in my country so that's why I brought it up.

Been using a set of Flares myself in this one (PC3200 - CL14) and they've done fine but I've had better luck using a set of Tridents (PC3600 - CL16) and those with the right settings run great. https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-16gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820232438

I know that's really pushing a set but if wanting to run them at 3600 they will get it done. I don't know if you're wanting sticks of larger memory capacity per stick but that's what I've got here.
