Headphones or earbuds (wireless)?

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

A while ago I made this thread regarding the best pair of wireless headphones for around $60-80 (CAD), and the best (and kind of only) suggestion was the Sennheiser HD 4.40s. However, they were actually above my price range (so I never actually bought them) and I'm beginning to wonder if the sound quality improvement that comes with having headphones rather than earbuds would be worth it with such a "low" price-range. Wireless earbuds would be much more convenient for me as I would use them out and about a lot, but I decided to go with headphones since (at a given price) they generally have better sound quality, I also find that earbuds generally don't fit my ears very well, but that said, I haven't tried many of them. Like I said though, maybe with a budget of $60-80 CAD earbuds might offer good enough sound quality that it wouldn't matter too much.

Back in the 2000s there was a point where both expensive and cheap earbud makers were using Mylar cones which wore out in a few months and the solution then was to buy the cheapest thing you could because fresh cheap cones still sounded better than worn out expensive ones and if a set of earbuds was basically disposable in months anyway why spend extra money.  I don’t know if that is still the case though.

I sure hope that's not the case. I don't want to spend $80 on wireless earbuds every few months, surely they've thought of a better way to do that now considering you can buy earbuds with prices in the 100s of dollars.

I really really really do NOT like earbuds because they can never stay in my ears and they always keep falling out.

Earbuds are easier to carry around though.

Can you imagine what baby today headphones would have to look like though?  Big zucchini shaped things.

Earbuds or in-ears? Currently I only own earbuds that are not in-ear and to protect them to use them longer, I even applied foam. In-ears are also horrible for hygienic reasons. But now I got headphones, my life has become much better.

Yeah and you still have to put those in your ears that's why ear buds and in-ears are the same I think.

Wireless i'd go with airpods, but for gaming you should have cable, its a little bit annoying but gives better sound quality, most of the time.

I think most people that say in ears are referring to ones that go into ear canal.

Yeah, a bit confusing. I thought this type is called in-ear:

Exactly.

Even our webstores have them sorted into in-ears and earbuds.

Aren't Airpods around $150 or something? Even so, I don't have an iPhone and I believe there are a few problems with using them on Android. I don't plan on using them for gaming so that's not really a concern. The headphones I was looking at originally had an aux input incase I wanted to use them that way, although from the reviews I saw, I gather that there is no sound-quality difference between wired and wireless.

AirPods are Bluetooth speaker one would assume that there wouldn’t be a hardware limitation from using non Apple hardware.  It would have to be a software limitation if there was one and it would likely have to be deliberate.  I can’t speak to the cable-no cable thing.
