is it safe to use port for rgb

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

i connected msi led strip to my motherboard which has no rgb header(h110m-c/ps)

i think led is 12v (written in manual) and the port i connected it to is chassis_fan(written on top of it)

is it safe to use?

its connected and has red lights idk if red light is not that much because of low voltage or its actually supposed to be like this

If it’s not an RBG header... how did you even connect it?

if it’s a fan header, what is likely happening is your providing whatever channel the fans 12v pin is to that channel or RGB. If it’s lighting up red, I assume 12v is going to red, and ground is actually (and luckily....) going to ground. Plugging random wires into random plugs is never a good idea. You can easily end up shorting things out.

still not a good idea though...actually fried a strip of mine once when I plugged it into a fan header instead of a rgb header by accident

if im getting this right you stuck a 12v led strip in a fan header.

ok lol sure whatever floats your boat that will probably be fine. red light could just be the voltage its sending out but i mean you aint really changing that are you XD

if its working nothings gonna break.

The holes on a RGB cable is a lot smaller, the pins on the fan header are way too big for it.

Most likely, as the actual RGB header is way too small to fit into a regular fan header.

In this image the pins for the fan header located to the right of the RGB header (circled in RED) is a lot bigger. I just purposely tried to plug a RGB cable into a fan header, it won't even fit.

the one that i connected it to looks kinda the same but the name is chassis_fan and it fit easilly with no struggle

Then what MSI has most likely done is converted to fit into a regular fan header and it's running off the 12v, because some RGB are 5v and plugging a 5v into a 12v header will fried the cable the moment it's turned on.
