Question for Nintendo Switch owners..

GamerBlake

For those of you who have a Nintendo Switch:

1). Does everything I need to start playing come with the Switch itself?

2). Are there any additional accessories that are “must haves”? If so, which ones?

3). How long does the battery last?

Im asking about the regular $299 Switch not the Switch Lite.

Thanks :)

1. Yes

2. Pro controller or 3rd party controller if you plan on using a TV at all

3. Depends what you're playing, in something like smash 3-4 hours

From my experience...

1.) Aside from the games themselves, yes. It includes 1 pair of joycons, a dock, power cable, and hdmi cable

2.) If you plan on downloading more than a few games, a microSD card might be necessary for the extra storage (they're so cheap no anyway). And if you plan on playing for extended periods of time away from an outlet, Amazon has a few options for battery cases that will charge the switch from the case (they come in a range of sizes).

3.) Depends on the game, but I usually have no issues on 3-4 hour flights.

What about like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Pokemon Shield? Same 3-4 hours?

Oh ok, I actually ordered a 128GB Micro SD as part of the bundle. It offered either 64GB, 128GB or 256GB. Is 128GB enough for starting out?

Yeah i only have a 64gb and its fine. Biggest game I have is Breath of the Wild and I think thats like 10-12gb. Nintendo games are expensive so I can't afford to fill up my sd card anyway haha

Definitely can (that's how those battery cases work that I mentioned above).

1. I think it came with an HDMI cable, but not 100%. More like 90% it did. But aside from possibly that you're golden.

2. The Pro Controller is nice. I mean I like playing with the joycons too even when docked, and Super Mario Odyssey plays best with the joycons for the motion controls. But the Switch Pro is more comfortable for most games. Also the joycon grip sucks, I used it for five minutes and decided the joycons felt way better split when playing docked.

3. I have the old Switch and can get 2 to 2.5 hours out of intensive games like BOTW. I think the newer model red box Switch gets 4 to 4.5 hours battery life.

It's a hell of a console and I enjoy it both handheld and docked. The library now is pretty diverse too and loaded with quality games. It's easily the best console Nintendo has made since the SNES.

Context: I have a normal Nintendo Switch, not one of those updated ones with a better battery life, not a Lite.

1) Other than the games, yes. Of course you get two joycons, which you can use as one or two separate controller(s).

2) USB ethernet adapter. I believe the Switch can do up to 10/100Mbps, but I still find it valuable as it just is a stable connection. I also like my GameCube controllers, so see the GameCube adapter as needed too.

3) During Smash Bros. handheld I get like 3-4 hours of battery life, depending on the screen brightness.

If you plan on taking it to go a lot, I recommend a power bank with at least 18W USB-PD capabilities and likewise an 18W USB-PD charger.

Oh one accessory that's a must is a good case because honestly the Switch feels a little fragile, being so thin. Not built like a tank like the New 3DS XL feels like in hand or say original Vita.

Eg something like this (which is the case I use when taking my Switch out)

Despite owning a Lite some things are just universal for Switches. For one a Micro SD card is a necessity. 64 GB minimum these days is the standard for a Switch. Even with cartridges games will rapidly eat up the 32 GB internal storage. On top of that a screen protector and some kind of case helps to protect it. Battery life depends on the type of Switch you pick up with the red box Mariko revision of the Switch having significantly better battery life than the original white box (4-9 hours vs 3-6). Regardless some kind of decently large battery bank would be a great inclusion however not entirely necessary with the Mariko revision

Since I saw in the other thread you smartly bought the Switch revision over the OG and Lite, I'll say this:

  1. out of box, yes, you have everything.  You're all set to play it portable-ly and on your TV.  The dock is there with an HDMI cord.
  2. Biggest two must have accessories, The official pro controller and a tempered glass screen protector.  I saw you already got a micro SD card, so no need to mention that again.
  3. For the revision you got, Nintendo states anywhere from 4.5 to 9 hours of playtime.  image.thumb.png.b685aebd7824af503373eb3255c6be68.png

So decent battery life.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

Thanks! I’ve only played 2 games so far ?. Pokemon Shield & Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Both I got physical copies of from Amazon.

But if you have any recommendations of really good games I’d be happy to hear them. ?

I strongly recommend getting a screen protector as a priority purchase, as the plastic screen on the switch can scratch easily on the dock when you're sliding it in and out.

Yeah the dock is so poorly designed. It put small scuff marks in the bottom left and bottom right corners of my Switch. Not over any of the actual display, but still annoying to see on the screen.
