If your current home PC died today, how upset would you be?

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

I am on my PC as soon as I get home from work until I sleep. I don't even own a TV anymore, i'm on it always whilst at home.

I would obviously be gutted that a very expensive custom-made pride and joy died. Imo, I feel like your own custom desktop is like a work of art... Although, 10% of me would be 'slightly' happy as it would mean that I would get to build another brand new PC from scratch again even better than my last! :D

So if YOUR desktop died today and all parts were 100% dead, (assume though that you have backed up your files), how would it affect you?

I would be really damn upset because my current rig is sitting at around $2600 (just the parts sitting in the rig). I accumulated that over time, I can't afford to replace it all in one go.

After I was finished feeling shitty I'd slap my 5820K rig back together and be fine usability wise, there's no difference between that an my main rig in real world use because I play at 1080p ultrawide lol. Main rig is more of a bench machine/for the love of the hardware itself, not a practical need for that level of performance.

Currently I have a laptop as well, so I could just use that.

Can we assume I can use warranty stuff still? Because I would be pretty annoyed I had to troubleshoot it and get stuff replaced.. But not end of the world I guess?

I have a feeling the "I'd be sad but then swap to the alt rig" will be a common answer here lmao.

Tbh right now it would be a godsend, all it does is distract me from my assignments

But then I'd just throw together a bunch of old parts and be back at it again

I'd be really upset of course. But I still have my tablet to keep me occupied. I always like to watch my shows once I get home from work. I also still have an old laptop I can use.

I mean the reality that the ENTIRE system fails is super unlikely, unless you have a total sh!t PSU and it fries everything it touches.

IF that happened I back up all my files to my external NAS which itself is in RAID 10, plus core documents I use are also on my Onedrive account. If I somehow lost that all I would be TOTALY f#@ked. I make a living with my computer and everything sitting on my desk is well in excess of $6k+ so that would be a bad day if my entire system died. I have other computers I could use immediately but I probably would legit cry hahaha. No joke if my house is on fire it is the first thing I would grab.

That said this exact thing happened to me back when I had a dedicated server, the stupid server rack case was casing a short and corrupted 10TB+ of data, cost my over $1k just for data recovery and I had to replace all my hard drives. So that was nearly my worst case scenario, luckily the data was all recovered. As much as it cost me the data is priceless.

Half upset I guess. On the one hand i would be out a bunch of money because my build cost about 2.5k total when I built it but I guess some prices have gone down. I live near a microcenter so I would just go a buy new parts and build a new desktop but I would probably opt for a cheaper graphics card as I don't play that many demanding games as of late and I could easily get away with less than a 2080ti especially seeing as the new line of nvidia cards will likely release some time this year.

well, i would be very sad because it's a custom made piece of kit.

also, i finance my builds in part by reselling the old parts. if all parts are 100% dead, resale value drops to near nothing.

i do have my server tough, so i wouldn't lose any distributed computing progress.

Tbh my pc gets used as a media machine more then gaming.

So if it died today i wouldnt be too upset (outside of the money loss that is lol).

Tbh theres a few things around the home i need to get done that i neglected for the past week that it would probably make me happy if my pc was out of commission for a bit.

The only thing I would be little bit sad about would be if I lost some game saves.

My computer is 6+ years old.

I mean, I would be kinda upset and I would try to get the parts fixed by the respective manufactuers (if still under warrenty) and try to save as much parts as I can. But I guess really depends on which part(s) fail. I don't think I have money just laying around for a new pc.

But I have a laptop I could use and phones and stuff.

hahaha I have depression haha lol

I'd be upset, but since I don't game on my PC nearly as much as my PS4...I'd get by.  I'd not rush out and buy a new expensive PC either...instead wait till the PS5 comes out.  Wouldn't it be great if browsing the web on a PS5 was as fluid as on a PC...I think I'd give my PC to one of my kids :)

Uh. Very? But how screwed? Not much. I still have my R7 1700, haven't even reformatted my old SSD when I upgraded to NVMe, and my 1070 has been in the need of an upgrade for a while now, plus I could substitute it with my old 660Tis until I finally actually decide to pull the trigger. Losing the motherboard would suck the most, it's a nice board. All in all I'd just need a new PSU and motherboard (and a case, for sanity, old cases have so awful features). Maybe I'd use the opportunity to buy a tent and move to the forest instead. It calls me. Computers complicate life so much.

Or I could just be meh and continue with my FX-8320 -system and a single 660Ti, it's already built so only a matter of plug and play. No, it's not still around because I have an issue. Of course not. There's a perfectly logical reason. No, I'm not going to share it. Pfft. Stop judging me, I'm not a hoarder!

Not very, its just hardware and all the data would be safe.

I would be annoyed at all the effort I would have to either claim money to buy a new one or effort to save and build again. Probably go and get one on finance to a similar spec if the insurance etc wouldn't cover it.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the PC and feel great that I built it myself, there is a lot of me in the build.

I would certainly get the same case again, just update the rest.]

There is no excuse to lose data these days, with plenty of free storage out there in the cloud plus low cost of drives and the fact we are moving away from HDDs means there are drives ripe for cold storage out there and warm storage on SSDs is acceptable at the current cost per TB.
