VPN file share access, what should I use?

Jack_pegasuscloud

Hi all,

I have file shares at home i would like to access over a VPN currently i have a USG Pro 4 and have successfully setup a vpn but I cant access my file shares on my server running windows 10 over the VPN but can when connected to the LAN network.

Equipment:

USG PRO 4 (router from ubiquiti)

Ubiquity 48 port switch

R510 Server (hosts the file shares)

R620 (does nothing at the moment)

Conditions:

My server is using a cloud directory service to apply users

I am using access control so users have access to shared folders and their own folders.

I can ping these servers over the vpn

VPN is using the 192.168.4.1/24 subnet

LAN is using the 192.168.1.1/24 subnet

Any ideas?

I originally created this in the servers and NAS section but figure this is a more appropriate place for it

Do other protocols work? Have you allowed the VPN subnet to access the other subnets and vice versa?

Workstation:

Intel Core i7 6700K | AMD Radeon R9 390X | 16 GB RAM

Mobile Workstation:

MacBook Pro 15" (2017) | Intel Core i7 7820HQ | AMD Radeon Pro 560 | 16 GB RAM

Can you RDP into the server from the VPN?

Can you connect to the VPN using shell commands while outside your LAN?

No I can not. I have tried accepting traffic from other subnets in windows firewall but this did not work maybe i did it wrong?

Is RDP enabled on the server? If it is then you have a configuration error with your VPN.

Have you been connecting to the VPN from outside your network (i.e. on Cellular connection on your phone or another internet connection)? Most VPNs don't work if you connect from inside.

Stupid question, but when you are at home on your LAN...and you can access your files...are you logged into the VPN at home...or are you simply connected to the LAN (without VPN connection) ?

Yes I am connecting from an outside LAN at a Remote Site.

OK then you probably need to look at your VPN configuration. I am pretty sure that something needs to be set up to allow data to flow between the subnets. You could try let the VPN subnet be the same as the main one so that it is all in one subnet just to test this theory.

I have tried to set the Subnet the same but it will not let me so i will try to look up how to d this with the Unifi network management software

Next time you are at home...I'd log into the VPN on a 2nd computer...then test if you can access your files...if that's not how you've been doing so.  That might tell you if it's a config issue with the VPN or a permissions issue ?

I can access files while just on the LAN and if I am on the VPN while at home I can connect to the server and do everything. i can try accessing the files from another subnet when I get home though.

think my thought on that test is flawed...cause when connected to the vpn you could possibly be still reaching the files using a non-VPN route.  Sorry I can't be more help.
