Will RTX 2080S get bottlenecked by i7 7700? Need expert opinion!

Hello All,

I am looking to buy RTX 2080 Super but I'm worried if my i7 7700 CPU will bottleneck my GPU's performance. I will be running all games at 1080p Ultra settings after my upgrade. Not looking to run it at 1440p. Still I'm curious if there will be substantial performance bottleneck because of my CPU.

System configuration:

CPU: i7 7700

Monitor: BenQ XL2411 - 1080p 144 Hz Monitor

RAM: 32GB ( 2 x 16 GB ) - 2400 Mhz

SSD: Crucial 2.5" 1 TB

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 4TB

GPU: GTX 1060 6 GB OC ( currently owned GPU, looking to replace it with 2080 Super by this weekend )

a 5700xt or rtx 2060 is usually enough for 1080P 144

Ye should 7gen i9 or 8gen I 7. Better yet if you can go ryzen ru 3800

Should be fine, the CPU is indeed the weaker link but it won't be as bad as it seems specially because you're targeting ultra settings which will put more workload on the GPU.

 

I had the same i7 7700 paired with a 1080 Ti in the past and it played out fine enough, I just recommend avoiding multi-tasking when you play demanding games. As it is I only suggest upgrading when Intel's 10th gen is launched and see if they'll improve pricing.

Not for gaming, the R7 3700X games pretty much identically to the R5 3600 which does lag behind the i7 8700K... BF5 is one of the games that plays out the best with AMD's SMT implementation and even there the 8700K still holds itself:

This is stock-for-stock, the 8700K at 5ghz should further the gap little bit further since the 3700X is already close to it's limit.

 

Then again the i7 8700K is not a processor that makes sense buying nowadays, hence the suggestion to keep the still very capable i7 7700 until Intel 10th gen release where we will get the i7 10700K being a polished i9 9900K for i7 9700K pricing... a very compelling pick for gaming focused rigs.

4 core 8 thread in 2020 is kinda bad to be honest.

 

an 8700k would be a nice match for a 2080 Super.

Not so much, it's roughly in between of Ryzen 2400G and 2600, same-ish single-thread performance and multi-thread performance in between, but i'd suggest upgrading to 8700k if you can. Depends on how much it would cost tho, looking at eBay it goes for ~300$ which is kinda too much but i guess it's still better than a new Ryzen 3600 based platform i guess if you have a good cooler to OC it. Otherwise, if you couldn't find 8700k cheaper than 300$ or you don't have a good cooler for it i'd go with some B450 board (not that if you aren't buying MSI MAX boards you'll need to update UEFI) and Ryzen 5 3600 for roughly 280$.

Depends on the game. My 8700k barely has headroom with a 1080 on 1080p

with cpu intensive games like the recent cods and bf’s. 
but if you limit the frames to 144 you could be ok. 
Id plan to upgrade but there are a lot of variables. Just get it and see.
