Help on creating a server

Go to solution Solved by WkdPaul,

Sounds like you're looking for a self host DropBox or OneDrive alternative, if so, you should look at OwnCloud ;

hi everyone, I recently created a home server for a friend who uses it for its daily work as a back up server, however he asked me for some extra features that are a little out of my skill level. What he wants is a server connected to his home network that allows him to store and edit files on the server but also keeps a copy on his pc so that he can edit the files if he is offline, he then wants the server to update itself storing the offline edited files when he reconnects to his home network. He also would like to have multiple users to be able to edite the files ate the same time as he works with a small group of people, kinda how Google drive does.

I aprecheate any ideas you have.

thx

there is no way a file can be edited at the same time by multiple users. Stop helping him, let him go and do his own research and pay for whatever impossible feature he wants to have. The last thing you want to be, is his free lifetime personal tech support.

Intel Xeon E5 1650 v3 @ 3.5GHz 6C:12T / CM212 Evo / Asus X99 Deluxe / 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 3000 Trident-Z / Samsung 850 Pro 256GB / Intel 335 240GB / WD Red 2 & 3TB / Antec 850w / RTX 2070 / Win10 Pro x64

HP Envy X360 15: Intel Core i5 8250U @ 1.6GHz 4C:8T / 8GB DDR4 / Intel UHD620 + Nvidia GeForce MX150 4GB / Intel 120GB SSD / Win10 Pro x64

HP Envy x360 BP series Intel 8th gen

AMD ThreadRipper 2!

5820K & 6800K 3-way SLI mobo support list

Of course there is. Windows Server 2019 (and I think maybe Server 2016) has a feature called Work Folders that does exactly what OP is asking for.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

The problem is that he does'nt have the financial ability to go with a payed option because he work in the area of scientific exploration and in my country the financial support for that is terrible. Do you know any free options?

thanks for helping out.

Work folder is available since Win7 as a download, but the setup is complex. Op’s friend is better off using google drive or one drive.

Remember "My Briefcase" from Windows 95? Basically that.

There are of course other ways of doing this, like just using dropbox/onedrive.

folder redirection and offline files should do the trick.
