Rocket League dropping support for MacOS and Linux. Refunds offered...kind of

I've played Rocket League on Linux before and always thought it felt like shit anyways, so this news really isn't that shocking. The refund issues are what I'd expect from Epic Games, so again, not shocking. Overall I think this is good news for Rocket League players if they can actually make switching to DX11 worth it. A fresh coat of pain on this game could be neat.

Game needs more optimisation, not shiny shiny... but oh well. It's shiny shiny all the way to the bottom now.

Well some companies think otherwise ;) . Plus with vulkan its never been more easier to make your game available on linux(bonus point is you dont need dx anymore)....

Cool, I could use a few extra bucks in my Steam Wallet for a game I absolutely never play but is in my library for some reason. Sadly I got it on sale for $12, not the full $19.99. But maybe I'll buy another LEGO game or something.

I think the game is well optimized as is. I've got an old rig with a FX 6300 and a Radeon HD 7870 and can achieve well over 60fps, so no complaints there. I believe there are other things that could be more important, such as server upgrades or fixing matchmaking but I'm sure those are handled by different teams.

Saw this coming as soon as Epic bought them.  I'm more surprised they didn't pull it from Steam.

They did. The only people that still own it on Steam bought it before Epic got it (May, 2019?).

I mean, it's not as if Windows is basically free now so you can't just Bootcamp on a Mac or install on a separate partition for Linux...

The thing about the 'inferior OS' is that it doesn't really matter when you're playing a game. If you're in to Rocket League, then you'll want to play it regardless.

Plus, it's not as if you actually use the OS other than to launch the game, so the operating system you're running makes no difference.

Dual booting for one single game when everything you do is in a single OS, that isn't Windows, is a bother compared to clicking an icon on my desktop.

Hearing both EA and epic.  Does one own the other or is this me mixing two things?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

@Bombastinator Not sure where the EA is coming from, but Psyonix developed Rocket League, then back in 2019 Epic Games bought them. (source)

Yeah.  Must have been conflating something. My bad.

Too bad.  I was actually going to pick this up during spring as the other games I play regularly are slowing down.  But, Windows is the one OS I don't have, and won't, so…no money for them.

Almost tempted to buy it, play it on both Mac and Linux, then request the refund, just to make a point.

Do people even play rocket league?  Iirc it was an attempt at an esports title but wasn’t picked up by esports or something.  Got a feeling the windows version isn’t far behind.

It's pretty consistently one of the top played games on Steam

Shhh. Everyone was gonna let them continue to post rando stuff in their own little world. I was not even gonna tell them about the international competitions with millions to win, or the streams etc, etc.

So you’re saying it’s actually a major esports title like dota2 etc?

Is it? What is the qualifier of being big in eSports?

As far as I know, my little fav sports on TV are still sports and have competitions, even if not all of them get in the Olympics/Main TV spots.

Rocket League is number 15. To me... anything in the top 100 is still and esport. Even if over that just would not be "known". But 15? 15? Com'mon!!!

Posting this here in case it helps others:

I tried requesting a refund using the automated system and Valve automatically declined it.

It looks like if you've owned the game for over 2 weeks then the manual method is the way to go.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

We asked for the refund and we got it, but it's only for the game. So, about 60% of the money spend on Rocket League is still lost in DLCs and so on.

Now what to do with the money... I am thinking of buying Artifact, if only to show some support but maybe it can revive them from the dead as well...

Quantity =\= quality

I would say that marketshare is definitely highly correlated with quality. If linux was the superior operating system and is a free alternative to windows why wouldn't companies run all their office computers on linux rather than windows? It would cost less and be superior right? Linux is great for some things and is even the majority marketshare for very specific use cases but for normal desktop users it is not. If linux actually provided a comparable desktop experience to windows you wouldn't see such a low marketshare.

Nope. Not even close. Sorry. Quality? Linux can be argues to have better Kernel/function quality. Mac better GUI quality. Windows hits the middle metric. If quantity = quality, *everyone* would own a Veyron.

You seem to be assuming primary use for a computer is gaming.
