Two 4 GB RAM vs. One 8 GB RAM?

I need 8GB of RAM for my computer system. Should I buy one 8 GB memory module, or two 4 GB memory modules (assuming other specs are the same). Also, can you please explain the pros and cons for each option.

As stated above, single channel you are effectivly cutting your memory bandwidth in half.

Always two rather than only one because a single DIMM can only run in single channel mode, while 2 or 4 will run in dual channel (or potentially quad channel if you have an HEDT platform) which offers exponentially more memory bandwidth.

It all depends what cpu you have and how many ram slots on the mobo. New cpus benefits from dual channel and fast memory, older ones not as much. If you have only two ram slots on mobo and want to upgrade in the future then one 8gb will be alright, cos you have space for another one if you need it. If your mobo have 4 slots than two sticks will be better choice plus you still have space for future upgrades
