Why does Modern Warfare lag so hard?

John55
Go to solution Solved by ARikozuM,

Most of my issues went away when I put it on an SSD. I don't quite know how the game is loading levels, but it looks to be by piecemeal.

Could you post your entire specs including where the game is installed?

Edit: I also wonder if the game is reading and sending data over network even while in campaign.

I have a i7 7700k, GTX 1060 6GB, 16GB of 3000mhz ram. My wifi is not an issue since I do not lag on any game that I play besides ModernWarfare. I set the graphics to low, I set the CPU priority to normal and such, I turned off NVIDIA overlay. Nothing works, I still get a 2 second lag spike every 5-10 minutes. Is this game only optimized for 8th/9th gen CPUs? Does it only do good with the RX GPUs? Does anyone have specs that are way better than mine but they still get the lag spikes?(This would rule out that my hardware is not compatible)

Lag is not poor frame rate/times. Poor frame rate/times is not lag. You need to be more specific about what your issue is for us to help you. Lag is either network latency or input latency. Neither of those is frame rate/times. All three of these manifest in ways different from each other.  If you are unable to tell the difference there are tool to measure each.

Idk if you have COD modernwarfare, but by lag, my screen freezes for 2 seconds and those signals like the red rectangles and red cycling clock show. I met someone that has the same GPU as me and he says he doesn't get those lag spikes. My CPU also goes to almost 98 percent usage when playing this game so that might be it? Not sure.

I have an i7 6700K (overclocked) and an R9 390X (also overclocked) and my copy of MW also has weird lag spikes and 5 second freezes every 10 or so minutes. I am not sure why but I just thought I would say that you aren't alone. My friend has an i5 8400 and a GTX 1070 Ti and he has the same issue as me.

Thank you for the input. That i5 8400 is an 8th gen so that answers some of my questions. What the odd thing is is that my friend has the same CPU and same GPU but not Ti and he gets no lag spikes. It is just odd. Anyone have a i7 9th gen and still get issues? Because I notice my CPU spikes to 100 percent sometimes. I don't believe this game is optimized for the 7th gen CPUs.

I would love to put it on a SSD but this game is freakin huge. Anyways, I have it on a 1TB HDD. Here is the pathway it is on: This PC-New Volume D-Battle.net-Call of Duty Modern Warfare. I have a I7 7700K, a GTX 1060 6 GB, Corsair Vengence 16 GB RGB 3000MHz ram, z270e Strix Motherboard.

Are you sure that your friend is not getting lag spikes? Maybe he just doesn't notice them - unless he is just lucky and the game doesn't lag on his particular system. Both mine and my friend's CPU usage spikes to 100% during the lag spikes as well so it seems we all have a similar issue here. I am going to test if the game freezes on a much more powerful AMD Ryzen system to see if this is related to weaker CPUs with fewer cores or if it is just the game being buggy.

If you selected NTFS with 4096 cluster size and Compression OFF then it it correct. Your folder structure doesn't matter much except for organization. I don't think this is disk related since my HDD usage is near 0 when my game freezes and my friend has it on his SSD, but maybe you could test if it freezes when it is installed to your SSD? You could always move it back to your HDD if it still freezes.

@Husky where do I go to select NTFS and 4096 cluster size with compression off? Or is that too late since I already configured the hard drive? I would like to put it on my SSD but windows is running there and there is not enough space.

Those parameters are set when formatting the disk. The ones I recommended are the defaults so unless you changed them yourself then it is probably using the correct ones. You can double check this by running chkdsk on the disk in Command Prompt. It will list the file system and cluster size.

Just played through the first 3 or 4 missions and I experienced quite a bit of lag. I'm not sure what's causing the issues, but it seems to be the game itself and not any single component of mine. I even lowered and maxed the graphics settings to see if anything could alleviate the symptoms.

Specifically...

Gameplay?

Or just the cut scenes?

Because it loads assets behind the cinematics and on a HDD these loading stutters are hugely overproduced.

It made many many forums alive when the game launched due to heaps of cinematic movie stuttering.

Just wanted to clarify you also mean INGAME non cinematics too?

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

During gameplay. Cinematics are butter-smooth. Put the game on my 960 PRO to reduce disk-based issues such as queue depth and random/seq read.

In game, I finished campaign and lag doesn't bother me for cutscenes, just gameplay.

@Husky Nvm, I figured it out. I see my D drive is a NTFS and it has as 4096 cluster size. However, I cannot find if the file has compression off. Where do I see that in the chkdsk?
