Is It Worth Upgrading to 2 x DDR3 8GB or just keep the 1x DDR3 8GB? My motherboard can’t take DDR4 so is it worth getting dual channel of my 8GB or no

I saw it makes a performance difference or ok YouTube it made 10-60 FPS difference just because they were on 2 stocks not 1

Going to dual channel from single can give a performance uplift to a system, although how much very much depends on the use case and rest of the system configuration. Find out how much it costs as a first step. While matching ram is best, that might be difficult so don't worry too much about getting something else similar. Maybe aim for something at same speed as current module, at similar or better timings.

Dual channel will help but eventually you'll want to replace that 4/4 chip with something modern.

 

If you can hold out, I'd just grab a cheap stick of DDR3 for now and wait until 10th gen Intel launches in a few months or 4th gen ryzen later in the year.

 

Then sell off your old system or repurpose it for another task.

Say a game like battlefield. Would it increase FPS or stop stuttering if I buy the same exact stick? Or is it absolutely totally not worth it? 

 

I dont plan plan on upgrading at all soon because I’d have to get new motherboard aoso

It might mitigate some of it but no, BF is a pretty CPU intensive game and you won't eliminate stutters.

 

Newer hardware will minimize them.

it's not worth it...battlefield doesn't run well because it overwhelm your processor.

Do not spend a single more penny on this kit...sell it online as a combo and buy some ryzen 5 stuff with DDR4 instead.

1. The test machine there is a 6 core, 12 threaded CPU based off of broadwell-e (14nm essentially skylake) architecture which is superior to your CPU in both IPC and core and thread count. Additionally, it has quad channel memory support which you do not, and the CPU is strong enough to saturate those channels if the software can utilize it compared to yours.

 

2. Most of these side by side benchmarks with no actual commentary/methodology explanations are totally bogus.

 

 

3. Going to dual channel will probably help some but you are still limited to 4 CPU threads. More memory bandwidth after a certain point won't matter if your CPU can't utilize it for the software.

Hard to say man. It won't make stuttering go away but it will help. Spending money on old ram is a lost cause since when you upgrade it doesn't carry over.

 

At least with storage you can reuse it.

I'd suggest running monitoring software to see what the actual system load is when gaming. That might give a clue as to what might help or not. This is one occasion where having an AMD GPU makes it easier since it has a built in overlay, and with nvidia either you need a 3rd party tool, hope the game has it built in, or run separate tools on a 2nd monitor.

 

How this is done doesn't matter, but go into the game. If the CPU usage is 100% and the GPU usage is lower, you're CPU limited. Ram might or might not help here, as more ram bandwidth could free up more of the CPU's potential. If the GPU is 100% and CPU is lower, more ram probably wont help. If ram usage is close to 8GB, just get the extra ram. Especially with a 6GB video card, you could run out of vram depending on game settings and that would spill over to the system ram.

 

I still think, if the ram is cheap enough, it wouldn't hurt to get it.
