Can I use an i5-9400F with a H310 motherboard?

Hi, I have an i3-8100 and I am thinking about upgrading it to an i5-9400F, but since my mobo is an AsRock H310M-DGS (I know it's a shitty mobo, but I live in a country where PC components are really expensive and I was short on money) I wanna know if it's fine to just use the same motherboard for the new CPU, since it's TDP is 65W and the maximum CPU TDP of my mobo is 95W. I really don't want to buy another motherboard for the same reason I bought this one in the first place: I'm short on money and PC components are expensive where I live. Thanks!

It will work as long as you update to the latest BIOS; key word here being "work" and that only, as that's a really poor motherboard that I wouldn't normally put more than an i3 in personally. If I had to take a guess, I'd reckon it won't boost much or for too long as the VRMs will most likely start overheating quickly, but if you think you'd be fine with just the base 2.9GHz then it should be okay.

Maybe maybe not, I'm not sure what the rated boost clock is for that chip so I could be wrong, if it's not too high then that motherboard should handle it.

locked i5? you'll be fine. The VRMs won't throttle until like what, 100c? at the stock voltage of around 1.15-1.2v it won't get that hot as long as your airflow isn't complete trash.

 

I would do it as long as the price is right. 

 

If you can get a Ryzen 5 2600/3600 + a B450 for no more than 50% more than the cost of the 9400, i'd get the Ryzen instead.

 

Currently in the USA, A 9400F is around $200 and a Ryzen 5 2600 is ~$120 and a decent B450 is $100. In this price case, the 2600 makes a lot more sense.
