Video/Photo Editing PC under 1500AUD

RIL34

1. Budget & Location

Between $1000-$1500 AUD (Australia). Will not go over.

Will be using my old PC's HDD's and power supply

2. Aim

Main aim will be for video editing (4k using premiere pro) and photo editing (Lightroom/photoshop).
Secondary to that will be general use/general multitasking.
Thirdly will be light gaming such as Dota 2 and similar games (I like to multiplayer games but I don't care much for having the best quality ever)

3. Monitors

I have one monitor at the moment it is a 27" running at 2560x1440@60Hz. I am looking at getting another smaller monitor to use just as a side monitor, nothing more than 1080p.

4. Peripherals

Not needed.

5. Why are you upgrading?

PC is slowing down quite a bit and is taking a while to buffer, load, and export footage when I'm editing now. My case is also way too big for my desk so I wanted to get a smaller case but that means buying a new motherboard at which point I figured if I am upgrading my SSD, motherboard, and case I might as well throw in a new CPU and GPU and do the lot.

The specs for my current PC are:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5 3570k @3.4GHz, Ivy Bridge 22nm
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H
  • Memory: 8GB dual channel DDR3 @800MHz (11-11-11-28)
  • Video Card: ATI AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series 2048MB

The build I am looking at currently is similar to the video linus made.

PCPartPicker Part List: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/RLwXn7

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor  ($314.00 @ Shopping Express)
  • Motherboard: MSI B450M MORTAR MAX Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($148.00 @ Shopping Express)
  • Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory  ($213.00 @ Shopping Express)
  • Storage: Silicon Power A80 512 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive  ($105.00 @ Umart)
  • Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER 4 GB SC ULTRA GAMING Video Card  ($299.00 @ PLE Computers)
  • Case: Corsair Crystal 280X MicroATX Mid Tower Case  ($175.00 @ Austin Computers)

Total: $1254.00

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Edits:
- Upgraded from Asus GeForce GTX 1650 4 GB DUAL OC to EVGA GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER 4 GB SC ULTRA GAMING
- Changed the storage from Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500 ($165.00) to Intel 660p 512 GB ($99)
- Changed the storage from Intel 660p 512 GB to ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 512 GB based on recommendation of using tlc over qlc
- Changed the storage from ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 512 GB to Silicon Power A80 512 GB

If you'd drop the 970 which is  way overpriced for a 660p or even a adata sx8200pro if prefer tlc ssds, you potentially upgrade you're gpu to a 1660

Edit: doesn't seem to get you the 1660 super i anticipated, but you could either save around $50 or get a 1TB 660p instead of the 970 Evo for roughly the same price

I happened to notice you don't have a hard drive, ssd will slow down if it hits a certain capacity filled, so just slap in any cheap hard drive jsut to act as long term storage from projects you're not working on.

@Jumballi Appreciate the help! I've changed the graphics card accordingly. Also, I am using my old computers HDD's so I have plenty of HDD storage :)  @19_blackie_73 okay, I've changed the NVME over. I don't know what TLC SSD's are, I don't know a lot about storage or computers in general which is why I've posted here for help. I will leave the GPU for now, but depending on the final cost after updates I will consider upgrading! Thanks so much for the help thusfar guys! :)

qlc has lots of issues, tlc has had most of it's kinks removed, so stay away from the intel 660p unless you want your oc to come to a slog when you hit 50% capacity.

My 660p works flawlessly even at less than half the capcity left, it's a good drive for os and a couple of programs. That said, even then i wouldn't go to a 970 evo plus, but the adata which eould be $15 more than the 660p which replicates the same performance at a much cheaper price

I'm willing to bet that even you wouldn't notice the difference between all three drives if used as an os drive

Replace that 970 with something like this...

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/XML48d/silicon-power-a80-512-gb-m2-2280-solid-state-drive-sp512gbp34a80m28

Similar performance for less price.

Replace the ram with this kit. Faster 3600mhz cl16 kit...

You can go with a 3700x instead. 8c/16t are definitely gonna help you in video editing.

@Jumballi + @19_blackie_73 okay I've changed over my storage to the Silicon Power A80 512 GB that @VEXICUS recommended because it is slightly cheaper than the ADATA XPG SX8200 and I am presuming it is still tlc? I can't figure out how to check. In my googling I have come to the consensus that because I will be using it for my os I should aim for tlc.

As for the ram that vexicus recommends, I would have to ship that one to Aus, I'm not seeing any stores that sell it here so I might see if there is another 3600MHz if you really recommend it.

Yes it has TLC NAND.

Also, get a 3600mhz cl16 ram kit. It would be a significant upgrade over 3200mhz cl16 kit. Because Ryzen loves fast memory.

@VEXICUS okay great I'll see what I can get within Aus that's 3600.
Lastly, does it matter which of the 1650 super's I go with? i.e. there is asus, evga, inno3d, etc. some have one fan, some have two. Is there any difference between them all?

You can go with a use rx580 instead. Similar performance for literally half the price.

@VEXICUS You mean used like second hand? There's an rx580 here on sale https://www.umart.com.au/MSI-Radeon-RX580-ARMOR-8G-OC-Graphics-Card_39382G.html would that be worth getting?

Thats still pretty expensive.

You can get a used rx580 for around $160 AUD from sites like ebay/aliexpress with free international shipping.
