Question

I currently have an i5-4690K and I am looking to upgrade to an i7-9700K. Is 8 cores and 8 threads good?

I mean, it's a substantial upgrade if you need more performance but the i7 9700K value proposition is kinda bad and in April we will have the i7 10700K at the same price point but with Hyper-Threading (8c/16t) and more cache... so if the i5 4690K can serve you another 2 months...

It's a decent processor, but you could get a ryzen 7 3700x for less and you'll need to buy a new motherboard and RAM either way.

Specs: CPU: AMD Ryzen R7 3700X @4.4Ghz, GPU: Gigabyte RX 5700 XT, RAM: 32 GB (2x 8GB Trident Z Royal + 2x 8GB TForce Vulkan Z) @3000Mhz, Motherboard: ASRock B550m Steel Legend, Storage: 1x WD Black 1Tb NVMe (boot) + 1x Samsung 860 QVO 1Tb SSD (storage), Case: Thermaltake Core V21, Cooler: Noctua NH-D15

Yes, but that doesn't matter since you're buying a new motherboard either ways?

You'll need a Z490 motherboard but CPU cooler will remain compatible to LGA115X

Like others have stated 3700x > 9700k....that said 3900x > 9900k.  I'd opt for a 3950x over any 10th gen intel piece.  Prices are all over the place too...but if you are just gaming and browsing the internet the 3700x is impossible to beat at it's retail price...and any x570 motherboard that isn't a gigabyte model will work perfectly.  If I had $1000 to build a new machine it would be a 3700x/x570 combo...with a Samsung 970 EVO Plus m.2 NVMe drive and 32gb of 3600mhz ram.  Would be future proof for at least 5 years me thinks.
