Samsung 970 Evo Plus M.2 NVME going SUPER slow?

So I’ve been using this drive for a long time and it used to blaze along at 3,300mb/s read 3,100mb/s write..

 

But today when I logged onto my PC I felt like it was going slower than usual and now for some reason my drive is only getting like 600 mb/s read and I’m wondering what could possibly slow down an NVMe drive THAT much?  

 

Its a 1TB drive and it still has 630 GB of free space so I know it’s not because it’s full.

 

Any suggestions or ideas?

I’ll have to check that out. I’m not sure what could be causing it though since nothing has changed from yesterday when it was fine to today when it is not fine.

 

I do notice that my CPU seems to be a lot more busy than normal. Even when I’m doing absolutely nothing it says it’s 25%-30% utilization which doesn’t make any sense to me for an 8700K to have a 1/4-1/3 of its potential tied up just with nothing but Steam, Task Manager & HW Monitor running.

I also noticed my 860 Evo (which is a completely empty drive with not even a single kB of data on it)  is also 1/2 as fast as yesterday maxing out at 250mb/s read/write.

 

My benchmark even asked me to “ensure it’s plugged into a SATA 3 cable” but I know it is since it was fine yesterday and I haven’t touched the cables and if the cables fell out it wouldn’t identify the drive at all anyway.

check what's pulling the CPU and storage drives with Task Manager?

Try to reinstall the drivers from Samsung

I just used it as a baseline to see what exactly is making my computer feel so sluggish.

Turn off Malware bytes or windows defender, but otherwise never use userbenchmark for anything. Its trash

It may be trash looking for precise benchmarks but if it drops from 506 mb/s to 227 Mb/s it does show something is going on with the drive.

 

Ive never had my drives on Userbenchmark bench below 500 Mb/s.

So the antivirus built into Windows is scanning your drives. You can turn it off through the settings menu

But would it scan all the drives at the same time or do one at a time?  

 

Because my HDDs are fine it’s just the Samsung SSDs that are being affected?

You are partially right, but the margin of error is not  that much of mistake

Check drive health using Hard Disk Sentinel.

 

Update your chipset drivers and sata/ahci if there are any updates to the controllers.

 

Run Samsung Magician to optimize the drives and update the firmware if there are updates.

 

TRIM the drives from time to time.

I don’t really care about the scores themselves but even if it was totally wrong and said my SSD was 1 million Mb/s and I scanned again and it said 50,000 mb/s it’s true that both of those are WAY off but a serious drop like that would still show me that something is wrong with the drive if it dropped that much.

Just adding my two cents, but double check the temps of the 970. I've got one of those sitting under a heatsink on a Gigabyte b450, and it reaches almost 83°c without proper airflow. 

I pulled the heatsink off to test again, and sitting idle in Windows it was reaching 70°c, which is that drive's Max safe operating temp! Under load hwinfo had it thermal throttling. 

So double check yours & make sure there's at least a little airflow over the drive itself. The airflow from the stock Wraith Spire cooler an inch away was enough to bring it back to the 50s under full load.

Temps are 32C for the 970 Evo Plus, 29C for the 860 QVO and 28C for the 860 Evo according to Samsung Magician.

 

Also all drives are “good” health status.
