Does "AMD Chipset driver" mean Radeon Software?

Go to solution Solved by mariushm,

Download the latest driver from AMD.com : https://www.amd.com/en/support

Select Chipsets > select your socket (example socket AM4) > select your chipset

(for socket AM4, there's a single driver for all chipsets, so no matter what chipset you choose, you'll get same download. As I write this it's version 1.11.22.0454 from november 25. : https://www.amd.com/en/support/chipsets/amd-socket-am4/x570 )

The chipset drivers may bundle the Radeon Software (the control center application) which was previously installed by the video card drivers.

Or, the installation program for the chipsets scans what's already installed on your pc and also suggest updates for the video card.

For video cards there's often a "beta" driver which may have last hour fixes for latest releases but may be a bit buggy , and there's also a slightly older version which is considered more "Stable" and recommended.

Unless you have some super new games that have issues (crashes, glitches) and you think a driver would fix, you should go with the recommended / stable version. If you want "bleeding edge" you go with the beta... (the optional in your picture)

The drivers for video cards are also a single download, you can pick any recent video card from the amd site and you'll get same package ... https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-5700-series/amd-radeon-rx-5700-series/amd-radeon-rx-5700-xt

Like i said, there's the optional

Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.1.1 Optional
File Size
483 MB
Release Date
1/9/2020

and there's the recommended / stable

Adrenalin 2020 Edition 19.12.2 Recommended (WHQL)
File Size
485 MB
Release Date
12/12/2019

I am quite confused. I downloaded chipset drivers from motherboard's drivers page, and installed it. Then I downloaded Radeon Software as I have a radeon gpu.

Now on chipset install page it says as in the screenshot: Radeon Software 19.10.18

When I check radeon software I installed, it says 19.12.3

Are those the same things? Did I install new version over some old version?

Unnecessarily confusing why they would bundle stuff. On MSI board website under chipset download it says "Include AMD SMBus Driver、AMD Graphics Driver."

I probably installed that with the old radeon software bundled, then installed new radeon software on top of it. But when I click that bundle again, it tells me to uninstall a software version I dont even have. It must be confused.

I'll download every single driver I need again then reinstall them. Thanks

The AMD downloads page lists the latest beta, and the latest safe/stable driver (the 19.12.2)

The driver is on AMD's site, just not linked there directly on the page, you have to hit the "Previous versions" link.

Here's the release notes for 19.12.3 : https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-rad-win-19-12-3

You can see what was changed between 19.12.2 and see if you care about those changes, here's 19.12.2 : https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-rad-win-19-12-2

You can click on "Previous Drivers" link on the page and you'll see it: https://www.amd.com/en/support/previous-drivers/graphics/amd-radeon-5700-series/amd-radeon-rx-5700-series/amd-radeon-rx-5700-xt

"Switching between borderless and fullscreen in some games when Performance Overlay is enabled and Radeon FreeSync is enabled may cause stuttering." I definitely still have this issue. But I seem to have 19.12.3 installed. Maybe I installed 19.12.3, then an older version on top of it. I don't think so but anyway..

I have downloaded and installed the 50mb chipset driver. Now I am DL'ing the latest (optional) radeon software. I'll install that on top of my supposedly 19.3 version. Oh and next time I'll never download these from motherboard site. When it said chipset I thought it had something to do with the motherboard.. You think I should remove old one first or just installing the new driver is fine? I reinstalled chipset without removing anything.

I don't think you have to uninstall anything. You should be fine simply installing the latest version, the installer is smart enough to update all the files correctly.

For video card drivers you may have option to "custom install" or "clean and install" ... options like these uninstall the previous driver, optionally reboot pc and then the new driver is installed

So you shouldn't have to do anything manually.
