3900X cooler

Yasin40

Hello everyone

I've been looking around for a while and I can't seem to find a good answer.

What cooler do you need to cool a 3900X properly? Would a Scythe Mugen 5/Ninja 5/Fuma 2 be enough to cool a 3900X? Would a mild overclock be possible? Keeping temperatures below 75C or so. Would an Arctic 34 esports duo be enough?

Sorry for the odd post but I'm just very curious.

To be honest with u if i was running anything above a 3800x i wouldn't cool with anything less than an AIO.

I remember running my stock cooler on my 2700x, aswell as being noisy the temperatures were hitting well into the high 80*s.

I'd probably get something like a D15 or DRP4 for that.

Noctua NH-D15, Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 4, Cryorig R1 Ultimate, these are the best air coolers on the market. If you get an AIO look at 280mm or 360mm coolers.

Big air coolers perform better than pretty much all 240mm and 280mm AIO's. It's not until you get to 360mm AIO's that they yield better results, and at that point you are spending a significant amount more on your CPU cooler.

There is a bit more headroom but not a lot.

Yes, those would work. Here are some examples: https://pcpartpicker.com/builds/by_part/tLCD4D#h=718,620,710

It's a good idea to get a better cooler for the headroom if you can afford it though.

What case and ram are you using? Where are you shopping / located? Budget?

They can be better but not all of the time and definitely not 'pretty much all' 240mm / 280mm's.

The NH-D15 which is among the best of big air coolers can still often be found trading blows with 240mm's and is generally outperformed by high end 240mm's.

I have a 3900x on an MSI pro carbon AC B450 with the Scythe Mugen PCGH and 6 case fans (3 side intake ML120, 3 top exhaust Noctua 120mm redux 700rpm) in a Lian Li O11 dynamic case.

All core OC at 4.2 GHz @ 1.25V leads to idle temps around 46C and sustained load temps of 80 to 81C with AIDA64 stress test for 10 minutes. It's good enough for a quiet cooler although at full boost the ML120s make a bit of noise but nothing too bad.

I would consider a 360 AIO for lower temps at load but the Mugen PCGH is running quite nicely.
