Any good USB-C 10gbps flash drive?

Hi,

 

As the title suggest, I'm looking for USB-C flash drive that could support 10Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen 2).

Transfer data near that speed. As long as it can transfer at > 7Gbps constant for sequential read.

The closest you're going to get is buying a USB NVMe-drive enclosure and an NVMe-drive to put in it.

So, there are really no USB flash drive with that transfer speed? NVMe is still a bit big (I usually put USB drive to a key chain, and that key chain will hook to my trousers belt guide.

I can't say if they exist or not, but I certainly have never seen one. If they do exist, they're most likely fucking expensive.

I see. Thanks for the info. Guess I'll still have to stick with USB 3.0 flash drives. Can't believe we live in a world where SSD can achieve 4500MB/s continuous read, yet we don't have a USB flash drive that could get 600MB/s continuous read.

You can shrink the NAND flash module by reducing capacity and speed, but not so much the controller.

It's still next to impossible to even find flash drives that come anywhere near Gen1 read speeds... my choice for that is currently a 2242 m.2 SATA SSD in a small enclosure made to take no longer than that.

 

For my keychain I like having a flash drive that has both USB-A and USB-C, and while I have a 3 year old one that works decently (70MB/s writes or so) it's all broken now and needs replacement, but it's discontinued and all those I've found I've ended up returning becasue they'd write at freaking 15-20MB/s. Found a dual connection microSD reader, and that paired with a good fast microSD might be the only way, have some on order that should arrive tomorrow and hopefully work satisfactorily...

Thats because those Gen 1 flash drives leverage the same technology as UHS-I SD cards. Its basically a crappy SD card with a reader attached. 

Your best bet is to buy a UHS-II card and compact card reader if you want a small form factor but that probably doesn't look elegant. UHS-II cards are expensive as well. Honestly might as well buy a M.2 SSD.

Actually the one I had that worked well is one of those (aka it's a good SD). Those that don't work are the classic "controller + nand chip" style.

MicroSD card reader and with a UHS-II card huh? Hmm...

 

Well, I hate to say this, but we need those manufacturers come up with a super fast flash drives.

 

Oh well, guess NVMe enclosure still the best bet. Now to look for one with a big chunk of heat sink... Maybe should DIY a fan to cool it actively.

I just received my 4x Kingston MobileLite Duo 3C and Sandisk Extreme Pros (UHS-I U3 A2), and they work as expected so I've finally got what I wanted, compact dual plug USB keys running at 80MB/s write and about 90MB/s read.

Crazy that dedicated USB keys costing more performed 1/4th the speed.

Yeah. Flash drive are way behind the storage technology. Worse is they done nothing to improve since transition to USB 3.0.

 

But I'll like to wait for SD Express. Hopefully it'll come out by this year, and we can have a ultra speed miniature portable storage but plugging the card to the USB SD express card reader.

 

Well, for a more cheaper alternative (but huge as ever) is to get a good M.2 (M key) enclosure with USB-C support. I spotted this one (Chinese brand) at my local store, so not sure if it'll work. The enclosure is okay in it's price, then add a cheap Kingston A2000 drive, should serve my portable storage needs, for now. It'll be a USD 100 investment (for a 256GB NVMe SSD + enclosure), whereas I spotted a 256GB flash drive with the price of around USD 50.
