More storage in your pocket - Sandisk/WD unveils new Drives @ CES 2020

For Sandisk, their upcoming drives comes in either a 1TB dual USB A/C or an 8TB enclosure, running on USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (Aka the 20Gpbs one), it is not known what cell level it is running on, nor the price.

Western Digital has a history of showcasing cutting-edge technological advancements in the consumer electronics space at CES every year. In 2019, a 4TB thumb drive was demonstrated, and this year, we have a 8TB portable SSD with a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 interface.

WD also announced some products with retail availability at the show. The SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe USB Type-C is a 1TB thumb drive that comes with a Type-C male port and a Type-A female port. It is compact enough to fit in a keychain and will be available in late Q1 2020. Pricing has not been announced.

Thoughts: Considering how most portable drives are still more expensive compared to an internal drive+enclosure, I am going to stick to the latter. That USB thumb drive is pretty attractive on the other hand.

More memory, more speed, good for prosumers. Though I wish they come up with Black 2.5 inch SATA SSD with 4TB or more capacity and a whopping 64GB DRAM!

Wonder what the real life speeds of those thumb drives will be? That has always been the limiting factor for me as most thumb drives never really breaks around 50mbps writes, especially with large files. Imagine writing near 1TB at that speed.

So:

An external HD which is apparently SSD with a high speed USB port of the newest type.  Reasonable, expected.

 

a NAS that is round, has a WiFi access point in it, and some software to make it be more user friendly to non tech savvy people.  I can see that.

 

a honking big USB stick done in USBC that holds 4tb.  That’s a lot.  Might be useful for someone.  Not me, but someone.

 

a 1tb usbC stick that has both type a and type c ports on it.  Kinda hating the gigantic fold down cover for the type c port, but on the whole, great idea

 

An 8tb external drive with a high speed USB port of the newest type.  Similar to the “game” drive but larger and done in salmon with teal polka dots.  Find the case designer, take him (because I don’t think it’s possible a woman could have made that thing) out behind the building, explain that the 1990’s were thirty years ago, and put him down.  

 

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

For things like batteries you can stack even multiple ones together. Someone just needs to come up with a physical form standard that can connect USB-C devices in a stack and always line up.

I'm with you on the NAS, I saw that and thought it would be great for my girlfriend who takes 1000 photos a day of everything, but then is too cheap to pay for iCloud storage so this would be perfect. 

 

If it could then upload to Google Photos or something so you can get places/facial recognition that would be even better to help sort all your photos.

Would be nice if someone made SSD that is ultra cheap because its performance sucks, but is huge, I'm talking 4TB+ capacity. That would save me all the hassle of picking a HDD that's huge and quiet. Coz none of them are quiet. Instead, they are all stupid high performing with stupid high prices. Ugh. Yeah, it's literally use SSD for bulk storage of random junk. Just not for 400€ and more for 4TB...

I'd still want something more practical than that. And quiet. I'd even take JMicron powered SSD with slow NAND, but in massive capacity on the cheap. But there is no such thing in existence. Even the Goldenfir SSD's on freaking AliExpress are just few 10 bucks cheaper than Samsung drives and only come in 2TB capacity anyways...
