As I said, that $50K quoted price is only partly dictated by the CPU upgrade.  Most of it comes down to the 1.5TB of RAM, four workstation GPUs, the 8TB SSD... you get the idea.

^^^ Almost all the RAM lol. Max config on everything but the RAM (keeping it to a "reasonable" 384GB or so) is $32K last I checked. The entire top end of the Mac Pro is purely RAM pricing.

Pretty amazing actually. This thing being on consumer socket in 2020 now is incredible for sure. The complete Ryzen lineup is awesome now, there is no slot it doesn't cover for everybody.

Not sure if that's expensive or not...

Whoever this is aimed at is probably salivating at it regardless of the price so there's that. Though I'm surprised it can turbo that high... But that's only on a few cores and not all cores, right?

My brother and I are going to sit down and do a deep dive on this, and see if its worth selling the board and 2990WX system we put together months ago to get our incoming video editing done faster.  Work on that end has really picked up so this may financially be a real gain for us (or not, have to dive into the numbers).  We have 128gb of 3600mhz ram that right now we are having real issues getting at 2933mhz with this 2990WX and would like to really utilize what was purchased.

Also, a dirty secret that Threadripper backers conveniently forget: even the 64-core model supports a maximum 256GB of RAM.  That's a lot, but it would also rule out high-end configs that some of Apple's customers will need.

Yeah but the Mac Pro uses a Xeon which would mean it would be compared to EPYC which supports a lot more than 256Gbs of RAM

Also: what AMD also doesn't tell you is that the Xeon rig can support more than 256GB of RAM.  The Threadripper config would be useless in situations where you're memory-constrained... and yes, that happens in the market for workstations like the Mac Pro.

You can put 2TB or RAM in a TR system, only thing that's preventing this is largest size of UDIMM you can buy. Each memory channel supports 512GB.

We have 128gb of 3600mhz ram that right now we are having real issues getting at 2933mhz with this 2990WX and would like to really utilize what was purchased.

Have a look at this chart and check what memory modules you have, you likely have to go with fewer larger ram modules to get the faster speed you want.

With 128GB RAM, even with Zen 2, it won't be easy to run them at 3600MHz.

Also, a dirty secret that Threadripper backers conveniently forget: even the 64-core model supports a maximum 256GB of RAM.  That's a lot, but it would also rule out high-end configs that some of Apple's customers will need.

Then remake the comparison with a dual socket EPYC, probably still cheaper than Intel solutions

Then remake the comparison with a dual socket EPYC, probably still cheaper than Intel solutions

Needing more than 256GB is not even remotely common in the high end workstation market anyway, someone might need it so for Apple it makes sense to go with a platform that can but it's not like you can't also build an EPYC workstation either. It's purely a "we're currently optimized for Intel so that's what we have to pick" situation.

Hell we have quad socket E7-8890v4 servers with 'only' 256GB ram. Ram is expensive so we only put really large amounts in servers that actually need it.

Edit:

Also about the ram being expensive, if you are buying 256GB+ of ram CPU price really starts to matter much less. It's just that going with a Xeon platform makes any more normal mid range configuration not very good value. Cater for such a large range of customers is costly on them and comes with compromise.

Not saying it can't be done. Just mean it's harder to have it stable at higher speed with 128GB than 32GB. My rig has 64GB RAM. I already have difficulty to run them stable at 3600MHz with reasonable timings. I end up only do 3400MHz CL15.

Yeah, wasn't implying that you were right or wrong about anything. Just posted it in case anyone was curious.

Yeah but the Mac Pro uses a Xeon which would mean it would be compared to EPYC which supports a lot more than 256Gbs of RAM

Epyc also costs considerably more than Threadripper, though... the cheapest 64-core model is $4,784.  Still more value per core, at least according to Newegg, but it's not as good a value as it sounds.

You can put 2TB or RAM in a TR system, only thing that's preventing this is largest size of UDIMM you can buy. Each memory channel supports 512GB.

True, but a Mac Pro buyer can get a system with more than 256GB of RAM right this very moment.  Something tells me a customer doing 8K video edits or high-intensity 3D/effects work isn't going to sit tight until memory capacities go up.

Simple buy one of these, just 3 examples. I know there are more.

Also having a look at the recommended ram for 8k video editing in 10bit colour from the specialist production companies we deal with list 64GB as fine, more as needed. So 8k alone isn't going to require 256GB+.

Just done a very rough comparison of cost per core, and cost per core per base-GHz of TR3K vs Cascade Lake-X. They're pretty similar on both, although if you consider the whole system then it pushes the value towards the higher end. Obviously this doesn't consider a lot of other things, but at least at a high level ball park comparison they're in the same ball park.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

As I said, that $50K quoted price is only partly dictated by the CPU upgrade.  Most of it comes down to the 1.5TB of RAM, four workstation GPUs, the 8TB SSD... you get the idea.

Also, a dirty secret that Threadripper backers conveniently forget: even the 64-core model supports a maximum 256GB of RAM.  That's a lot, but it would also rule out high-end configs that some of Apple's customers will need.

Huh?

You're objectively paying for more at this price point, $7k 28 core CPU vs $4k 64 core CPU.

And I don't know what you're looking at, because that 256gb number's incorrect.

https://www.pcworld.com/article/3197184/amd-ryzen-threadripper-prices-specs-release-date-and-more.html

You could say that Threadripper supports quad channel unbuffered so you can only go up to 256 (64 x 4) but there are 128gb ECC unbuffered memory modules for sale.

And if you get to a point where you need  more then that much of RAM, then EPYC exists for sale.

If you are wondering a $3990 CPU is expensive or not, just look at how it thrashes the TOTL server processor from Intel, and not just one but TWO of them in a dual configuration, and being ONE-FIFTH of the MSRP while we are at it.

This kind of CPU is aimed at extreme multi-threaded workload (though Linus would find a way for a 1 PC 16 gamers solution soon), where it requires stability over speed, so I assume the 4.2 boost clock is probably a short boost on a few cores, it should stay stable at around 3.2 to 3.5 all cores providing the cooling solution is adequate.

So unless Intel come up with something revolutionary, I'd say the Intel's entire prosumer and server market just got completely and absolutely obliterated by AMD at this point

I'd say it's performance in AVX workloads is probably on-par if not better with the AVX2 update in Zen 2 as well...

umm... there is

No there isn't. They don't quite clock high enough imo. Even those that have specs up to 4.7GHz realistically never hit that in games. It's usually 4.3 to 4.4GHz. If they were hitting 4.7GHz in games or even 5GHz, then that would be amazing for gaming. Instead, it's just fine. It works, but isn't exceptional. But I think the process and design they use for Ryzen isn't made for such high clocks regardless of core count. Coz otherwise they could easily forge gaming series with 8c/16t at 5GHz and offer that to gamers. It would be a sweet spot, sort of like 9900K(S) is for gamers. Paired with higher IPC and they'd crush Intel there too.
