Running Spotify on a USPS scanner

GetacFanboy

I've seen some posts on reddit recently of people doing some wacky things with their USPS scanners

For example, here's a post by u/CRF123 which shows a USPS scanner being used to play a video game:

I was actually able to get my scanner to do the same thing without loading any custom software! All you need to do to exit the MDD app is press the red button and the letter D, or manage to crash the application another way. Then you click the start button and type open sol.exe

Something really interesting about these is they actually just run the MDD app on Windows mobile. Theoretically, does this mean I could load any application on to Windows mobile?

These scanners actually have bluetooth as well! Could I load spotify on the scanner and use it to listen to music? That would give me a huge nerdgasm Linusgasm!

I don't think Spotify has Windows Mobile app, so you're likely SoL.exe

Do these have any form of cellular or WiFi? I would assume it would have some form of cellular connection to communicate with the mail servers for tracking etc.
If you could somehow get a web browser running I wonder if the spotify web app would work?

why no dark mode?

Yes, both! However, all internet traffic is ran through USPS servers, so it's hard to do that without raising some eyebrows. All data needs to be put on it through the SD card under the battery. Without a windows mobile app, I'm not sure what to put on the SD card.

I doubt that either, since any browser you end up using (probably IE, Opera or UC Browser) won't be compatible with the latest JS and HTML/CSS standards.

I work with one that looks like that, best you could try is open a internet browser and trying to use the web version of spotify

Just to be clear, devices like these typically run Windows CE or Windows Mobile 4/5/6.x. An App would need to be natively compatible with the OS in order to install, and the OS wouldn't support a modern enough web browser to run the web player.

You probably could get Windows Media Player running though, so you could almost certainly still listen to music loaded onto a memory card (though I'm unsure if there's a headphone jack - you could try Bluetooth speakers/headphones).
