Craigslist find for backup server?

I've been thinking about setting up a backup server on my network to, well, have one to backup my files.

I've been looking at synologys and that kind of stuff, but maybe also building something...I don't really know yet.

 

I was looking over craigslist and found this, and wanted to get opinions on it..price, capabilities...is it too old for the cost? To costly for the value?

Dell T5500 workstation
16 core cpus
Dual Xeon e5520 cpus
48gb ram

 

The seller says it has 5 SATA hookups for drives...not sure if that includes the cd-rom that's in there or not...but I'd been tinking about a 4 drive RAID, so either way, that works, I think..

Anyway, I'd appreciate toughts on this.

Just something to bear in mind when looking at those pre built machines, their motherboard and PSU is normally propriety

how much does electricity cost where you are?

that may be a cheap up front price but if all you wanna do is backups the cost to run that thing is gonna add up quickly.

 

the Idle consumption of this system is probably higher than a more up to date solution under full load.

T5500 has an option to have 2 CPUs.

Agree with above, you may be better off with another solution. Hell even a WD cloud NAS, I used to use one a few years back and it was fine for using for backups and sharing. Just doesn't have plex etc.
