GPU - Cost/frame vs Future-Proofing

Which is surprisingly sad for me ?
Just one more thing, I dont play many RTS games other than AOE-2 and hence simulation or CPU intensive games are not in consideration. I just want to play Tomb-raider or Doom/Cyberpunk 2077 when they come out on 60fps. But not go the console way.
Having said that, I really have no way to experience the monitors @1080p or 1440p ultrawide here. My laptop has a 120Hz screen and a MX150 in it. I can play Bioshock and the likes at 100 Hz easy with fairly high settings and honestly while I think around 90 is a sweet-spot for me, I am perfectly happy with 60Hz as long as I have not seen it @90 in the same session :P

Cyberpunk 2077 I wouldn't expect 1440 ultrawide to run 60fps+ on these cards without significant settings reductions. But that's a guess.

my rtx 2080 and ryzen 7 2700x build runs two 1440p monitors and one 1080p monitor.

i get bottlenecked in games like csgo where i can only get 120-140 fps (which sucks since i bought a 240Hz monitor -.-)

but my general fps in games is around 120 on ultra 1440p on newer games like CoD with RTX on.

Older games like dying light with everything on max still gives me 160 fps.

maybe theese numbers might give some insight into your decision. The 3600 is going to have better single core performance than the 2700x so you should get better frames in csgo (if you play the game that is)

Anything i've written between the * and * is not meant to be taken seriously.

yea, So I am inclined to spend the extra for 2070 Super and go for a 1440p ultrawide. The question is, at half the price, how bad is 2060 with 6gigs. its 22,000 while the 2070Super is 40,000

I'd only enrertain the 5700xt or 2070 super imo. Anything less not worth it

And in some scenarios that barely even power them now at 1080p.

1440p 60 is easier to power than 1080p 144 but you go with the latter.

No with 6GB especially for 1440p. Get 8GB 2060S at least.

Thanks this helps. So i should not see a significant downgrade on the 2070 Super.
But wow, you are getting kick-ass fps with RTX on. I am assuming the drivers are getting better and better.

Okay. So its between the 2060 Super or 2070 Super.

Also yea, 1440P ultrawide at 60 would be about the same as 1080p at 143fps

Yeah i think better go with either of those, somehow 5700/5700XT performance drop more at higher resolution compare to their Nvidia counterparts.

Which monitor you going to buy btw? 100hz is kinda odd imo.

Getting a sweet dael o the Samsung CJ79

I believe the AMD freesync should now work with Nvidia cards as well given their adoption of adaptive sync or am I wrong?

Nice.

Freesync should work with Nvidia cards for 1000 series and newer but only those in Nvidia's Gsync Compatible list is guaranteed to work flawlessly.

Yeah because 1080p/60 will be easier to maintain than 1440p/60 over time, and you won't need to lower resolution on the 1080p/144 you just get get less frames, but playing at 1080p on a 1440p display sucks and playing under 60 sucks

Well I will say that I think that the 5700 XT is better than the 2070 Super.  Roughly 95% of the performance at 80% of the price is a deal and honestly considering the performance cost of enabling Ray Tracing on a RTX card, RTX is pretty useless on anything under a 2080 Ti.

Another thing to consider is what everyone else has been saying.  1440p ultrawide at high refresh is going to be tough.  You would really want a 2080 Ti, especially if your looking a couple years into the future since we all know games will just become more demanding.

The good news is that I did a bit of research and when you start looking 3 years into the future, a $1000 2080 Ti is just about as good a value as a $400 5700 XT or a $500 2070 Super.  The reason this is true is that GPUs tend to increase in performance by about 30% over 3 years and the 2080 Ti is just about 30% great performance than either the  5700 XT or 2070 Super.  Basically in 3 years you would have to replace the 5700 XT or 2070 Super to get the same performance a 2080 TI would give you today.  Another way to look at it is that over a 6 year period you would end up buying two 5700 XT/2070 Super level of GPUs for $800-$1000 total investment or you could just spend $1000 today and keep chugging along with your 2080 Ti for 6 years and still be at roughly the same performance level as buying and replacing a $500 mid-ranged card today.  The benefit of course is you would get the performance advantage of the 2080 TI from day one.  The disadvantage is you would have to be pretty disciplined to not be enticed to up and replace your 2080 Ti early due to the new, bright and shinny toys that will come out during that 6 year period.

Hey. Thanks for this. I wish I had read it sooner. But much appreciated. I bought the 2070 for peanuts. And the 1440p ultrawide 100hz Samsung panel. Turned out, there was a time dead pixels which only popped up after 4-5 hours. With the corona virus, Samsung is short on stock and have processed an entire refund. So I get a second change. I also got to experience it for a whole the weeks (I raised the complaint in the third day, they took that long :p)

Cyberpunk 2077 - while we can't guess how it will turn out, CDProjectRed is known to have PC optimised games with a graphics downgrade to fit the consoles. So it should'nt be very bad IMO.

On the other hand just because the game will scale down to lesser specs, doesn't mean that having a 2080 ti wouldn't offer a jaw dropping visual experience compared to the scaled down experience.   I honestly feel that you can really never have enough GPU power because when you consider the cutting edge AAA titles, the GPU is almost always the biggest limiting factor at some point in the lifespan of your computer.  Generally speaking I have find myself replacing GPUs almost twice as often as CPU's over the years.

For what is it worth though, I think that the demos we have seen for Cyberpunk 2077 were on a 9900k with a 1080 ti or so I heard.  I think the demos were all 1080p so considering how well the demos looked, if you have a decently fast CPU and either a 5700XT or 2070 Super, you should be able to at least get the demo level of quality at 1080p.

I don’t know if the games you play have a render scale option or not. If they do then I’d get a 1080p 144hz monitor and turn that setting up. I think plus 33% is close to 1440p.

1440p ultra wide is so demanding, I wouldn’t do it unless you can afford a rtx 2080 or better. I went with a 1080p monitor for that reason alone, I didn’t want to drop $500+ on a video card and I prefer having a higher framerate in my games so a 1080p panel made the most sense budget wise for me.

Regular 1440p, not to mention ultrawide, is really taxing so I wouldn't even look under the RTX 2070, 2070S or RX 5700XT. The ebst choice would most likely be the RTX 2080.

agreed, no less than 2070S, honestly a 2080S.  1440p is tough to drive at 100* hz, ultrawide makes it that much harder.

So honestly. I get consist 100hz with mgs5 and also A plague tale. (All settings at max. Forced ultrawide with hex editing.) But they can at times drop to 70. Otherwise everything is mostly fairly consistent. Now these titles are like almost half a decade apart.... Also I have heavely modded my mgs5 game..... But yea, just to give you guys am idea of how is working for me. I have never seen a CPU bottleneck with either of these games, but my GPU is running at an slight overcook. Also I only have three fans, and am kind of waiting to shift to a new place before I buy the fans (because I don't trust Amazon to actually deliver in time,).... And I wouldn't call my system, ideally cooled either.

Now ofcourse cyberpunk can just through this all for a toss... But the whole idea was to invest in the monitor and not change it, since it is also much costlier than the GPU, but hey!! I can always switch the GPU, that's why we all got pcs no....

You are unlikely to ever see a CPU bottleneck at this resolution, pretty much ever unless your CPU is very underspec'd.  That's a lot of pixels per frame, you are basically guaranteed to be GPU bottlenecked.  Hence why I would go big on the GPU (cyberpunk, red-dead, tomb raider type titles are going to be rough to play at that rez!)
