For my main system I upgraded my monitor to 34" 1440p IPS UItrawide, new 32GB kit of 3200Mhz RAM, and an R7 3800x. Also moved my mass storage from another system to a 4-bay external drive. And new cases for 2 other builds.

Nothing since 3-4 years but a mouse/keyboard. Going to finish university soon so it will be time for a big upgrade.

Went from a Sapphire Nitro+ RX 580 to a Reference RX 5700. It's a massive improvement in terms of thermals, noise, and performance. My case is a mATX modded PowerMac G5 and being able to exhaust all of the heat from the GPU directly trumps having a beefy aftermarket cooler. I can barely hear this new card over the ambient noise in my room where as my RX 580 was running at near 47dba under load. I'm totally stoked!

whats the temp on reference rx 5700? My Sapphire Pulse RX 590 put out 81c heater.

Put in a 1070 not long ago and the PSU popped last night so there's a new one of them now. Next time I need an upgrade I'm building a new PC. Hopefully we get more gooder CPUs by then

Went from a Dell office mouse to a G903

 

Went from a cheapo MX Red board to a razer ornata

 

Went from an RX 580 (died) to a GTX 670 to an RTX 2070

 

Got a secondary monitor again, dell Ultrasharp 24". Main monitor went from a 34" 1080p 75Hz monitor to a 32" 1440p 144Hz HDR one. MASSIVE improvements here.

ryzen 1700 + gtx970 fully capable of 60fps 1080p gaming

 

next possible upgrade would be a good 1080p 144Hz monitor ~$150 in 2021??

While this is true (and it's cheaper now anyways), was it the best option for $/performance? Probably not.
It's not a bad CPU. A bit on the more expensive side for sure.

wasnt the ref 5700 terrible? at least 580 from sapphire should have better reputation..

Nope! This card is great. My Sapphire 580 is hot garbage in comparison in terms of thermals and noise. Performance being massively improved is a given so I won’t knock the 580 for that.

I replaced my old HD7950 with the RX 580 (that I bought used) and replaced some fans with beQuiet ones and added some on top, because I wanted to try a push/pull configuration on my CPU cooler. I also Frankensteined (I hope Linus doesn't own the copyright on that expression) a fan mount from an old PSU and used it to mount a 120mm case fan in 3 5.25" slots (not exactly by the book, but it works nicely).
