Notices bulge - New Pixel 4a leaks (update: Delayed)

Renders of the A model for pixel 4 has surfaced, still featuring that big camera bump flagship phones seem to enjoy this year. Check the source for more photos

Quote

Google launched its ‘a’ series of mid-range Pixel smartphones in May this year with the Pixel 3a and 3a XL. We already knew the Pixel 4a lineup will definitely launch in the first half of 2020 considering Pixel sales grew 2x year-over-year in Q2 2019, as per Google CEO Sundar Pichai. Now, 91mobiles has partnered with @OnLeaks to bring to you the first look at Pixel 4a smartphone with 5K renders and 360-degree video. The renders show the Pixel 4a will feature a punch-hole display, single camera on the back, and 3.5mm audio jack.

The Google Pixel 4a renders reveal the handset will be the first in the Pixel lineup to feature a punch-hole in the top-left corner to house the selfie camera. The display will be flat and will measure 5.7-inch or 5.8-inch in size; this will be a small increase over the 5.6-inch screen of the Pixel 3a. A thin earpiece is visible above the display, and bezels around the screen are quite thick. However, the bezels above and below the screen are smaller than on its predecessor. It is unclear whether the handset will support Project Soli-based Motion Sense tech for gesture control, especially since the bezels are narrower than on Pixel 4.

Google_Pixel_4a_2.jpg

Moving on to the back, we see the matte finish back and the protruding camera hump. The camera layout is similar to what we have seen on Pixel 4 as well as iPhone 11 series — however, this time around there is only a single sensor and a LED flash. According to @Onleaks, there will be more sensors housed within the camera module. Also on the back are the physical fingerprint sensor and the big ‘G’ logo.

On the right edge is the Volume rocker and an orange-coloured Power button while the left edge is barren. At the top edge is the 3.5mm audio jack, whereas the USB Type-C port and speaker grilles are positioned around it. Overall, the design shows Pixel 4a will be smaller in size thanks to the narrower bezels relative to Pixel 3a. It will measure 144.2 x 69.5 x 8.2mm in size (9mm including the rear camera bump).

There is not a lot of information around the Pixel 4a and 4a XL available yet, but we can expect the handsets to launch at Google I/O 2020 developer conference — that means a launch in the first half of the year. It should come in the usual White and Black, as well as Purple colours, though the company may add another colour to the mix to keep things interesting (maybe Orange from Pixel 4 is could be ported here too). The smartphone should come with at least 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage, along with a mid-tier chipset, perhaps the Snapdragon 730 or 765 series options. Apart from that, we can expect the Pixel 4a to feature a 12.2MP camera on the back and maybe 5G considering 2020 is the year the next-gen tech is going to go global.

Thoughts: Sad that it seems like only mid-range phones these days will carry the headphone jack and none of the flagships, I will wait for the reviews too see if this phone is really worth the money or not.

These copy cats going after iPhone design is getting ridiculous. Are we seriously living in a day and age where companies have zero personality left?

It's not really copying the iPhone.  The Pixel 4 shares a similar basic design and came out weeks after the iPhone 11 series -- it was pretty clear that neither company was cribbing the other's notes.  This is really more of a cut-down Pixel 4 than anything else.

They're not, though. It's simply the logical evolution of the camera hump. If anything they're copying Samsung; before, Apple's camera modules were rounded off, Samsung's has been squared.

Apple does research.  Everyone else just copies Apple because it’s cheaper than doing research.  The result is that they often copy things without knowing what they do, which is sometimes nothing.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I have to express frustration with the title.  “Notices bulge” and “leaks” sound like battery degradation issues which are important because they are dangerous.

All I can say, is that I have the Pixel3a (apparently made fully or near that by HTC ex-phone engineers that Google aquired), and this phone is a beast. The experience of Android is top notch despite the med range chip and 4GB of RAM and eMMC memory. And the cemera does deliver. Unless you play demanding 3D games, I don't see a the Snapdragon 610 inside come close to struggle. The optimization of the OS, and and selection of hardware is impressive. Reviews support all my claims. Oh and batty life is an amazing 1 day and half to 2 days of battery life, because the SoC doesn't consume anything (~9h of on screen time with dark mode enabled and dark home screen and lock screen wallpaper WiFi/Bluetooth always on)

If the Pixel 4a follows the same path, I think it is another phone to really consider, especially if the price is the same as the 3a, heck you can get 2 or even almost 3 of them for the price of 1 premium phones with the same or, less stellar camera (depending on which phone we compare with, of the same 'generation').

I am very excited for this phone. Again, if you don't play demanding 3D games on your phone, I don't see why you need to pay almost double the price.

In the press shots Apple provided for their iPhone 11s and up, the camera bump seems huge. But in reality, it's actually flushed with the rest of the body, the bump is less than 1mm thick. The camera bump on that Pixel 4a is trying to copy the thickness of the iPhone Xs,

Prepare for $400, paltry internal storage, and IPS screen

The 3a has 64GB of high speed eMMC (last gen chips if I am not mistaken) storage and a decently bright wide gamut OLED display.

I don't see why it would be different on the 4a.

le sigh

And here I am with a LG V50 with a recessed camera despite having 3 lenses and a flash

Also why tf do mid-range phones have the headphone jack but not the high-range ones? That makes zero sense.

"Hey, pay more to get less than this cheaper phone!"

It follows the logic of: if you can afford a premium pone, you can afford wireless earphones.

I have a headphone jack on my pocophone, but haven't used it as I have several pairs of bluetooth ones. Unless you already have some high end earphones that use a jack, I don't get the reason for complaints. Things have to move on, or they stagnate.

Bluetooth headphones are more expensive, more complicated to use, have batteries that wear out and frequently aren’t replacable, and are annoying to pair and activate.  Cheap wired headphones are much cheaper and more reliable than cheap Bluetooth ones, and no headphones last longer than the speakers in them which isn’t all that long.  The biggest problem with wired headphones is the jack port is relatively large and there is limited space inside a cell phone.  A phone with less features could better afford to use that space for a headphone jack.
change Sheerly for the sake of change doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

Can't say I've ever considered an LG phone for its camera, so perhaps there's a difference in the actual hardware or a conscious design decision to highlight improved camera performance?

Think of it a little more critically. If a consumer wants to purchase a cheaper, lower end device, are they going to be just as willing to purchase an expensive pair of bluetooth headphones as consumers who are willing to spend a grand on high end flagships? Google is building a device for the market they're targeting, they're not just taking the Pixel 4 and cutting the price.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Lets be realistic here, all phones these days are just similarly sized metal rectangles with an all glass front and some camera shit at the back, there isn't exactly a heap of room to move on the design front.

Oh I don't know,  maybe some pin striping and white walls would separate the classics from the wannabies.
