Looking home server recommendations

Currently looking into building a server for couple things. The primary purpose for it will be for streaming 4k movies and tv shows. Possibly hdr content. Also to host a small gaming server and possibly a website. And if possible use it for a streaming pc.

I currently have left over pc parts from my old pc. I have a 6700k, asrock mobo (cant remember the model off the top of my head), h100i, 650w psu. Would just really need drives and some ram I believe.

My main pc is a 8086k @5.2ghz, 32gb ram, 1080ti custom watercooled of course.

Mainly trying to figure out if I should sell the parts and save up for different components or go ahead and just buy the drives and ram. Then have to figure out freenas or unraid. From the research I was doing, looks like I will need unraid for this. Any ideas or opinions are appreciated.

so ive been working on the similar setup for my house for both plex and for a small minecraft server...what you want to research what games you are going to host and make sure you spec in that department. when planning make sure you plan for hard drive expansion in the future

The 6700k will be fine to run a Plex Server with 7-8 1080p transcoded streams.  Assuming thats all its doing.  Adding in a game server will consume resources and reduce the performance and may introduce stuttering or the issues.  My Plex Server is a i7-4790k, which is basically identical in terms of performance.

Anything you add on top of that will increase the spec requirements.  I would suggest looking into a virtualized solution.  UnRaid with a few VMs.

Storage is the one place you really can't cheap out.  Once you figure out how much storage you need, and the level of redundancy you want, its pretty much going to cost $x per drive.

I have 86TB of storage on my Plex server, I stored all moves as their straight Blu-ray rips for maximum quality, and transcode as needed to the devices.

I will be upgrading the Plex Server to a 3950x next year once the prices have dropped and they become available again.  Then I'll probably not upgrade the CPU again for another 5-6 years.

Home PC: Apple M1 Mini, 16gb, 1TB, 10Gig-E.  Adobe CC and Ripping things + Daily stuff.

Gaming PC: Ryzen 7 5800x, 32GB, Nvidia RTX 3080Ti stuffed into a Corsair 380T.

Asgard the FreeNAS Plex Server: AMD EPYC 7443p 24 Core, SuperMicro H12SSL-CT Mobo, 256GB DDR4 3200mhz, Norco 4224 Rack Mount. 100TB+ TrueNAS Core.

Toys:

2017 Focus RS | Frozen White | Daily Driver

1989 Pontiac TransAm | GM Triple White | Heads/Cammed LT1 + T56 swap | Suspension goodies up the wazoo. | HPDE Weekend Warrior toy.

I basically have my unRAID server running the same hardware you have listed I can confirm it runs great I have it serving as my plex media server, my homeassistant server and around 12 dockers supporting torrenting it still has plenty in the tank I do not run 4k so can't comment on that but I get around 8 streams depending on transcode requirements at 1080p check my sig for specs

Thank you all for your input. Will have to continue just doing research. Still leaning towards unraid.

You won't be disappointed if you go with unRAID its a great os and the cheapest part of your build
